weed out courses

what would be some weed out courses for LSA students?

Econ 101
Math 116
Chem 210

I haven’t taken it, but I imagine Chem 215 is just as much of a weeder as 210, if not more. Orgo II is the most failed class (followed by Calc II and Orgo I).

Maybe Physics 140/240.

It was mentioned here that Econ 401 & 402 have really low average grades, I’m not sure if that’s because the people in them are just dumb, or because they are also weeders. Different people said different things.

chem
125, 130, 210, 215, 216
(211 in an easy A thanks to Dr. Nolta)

math
calc 1 and 2

bio
171, 172

^Really? I knew someone who took Bio 171 and they told me it was a joke.

Perhaps, but the average in 171/172 is B-/C+ I’ve heard.

Hmmm… Okay, I don’t know. Maybe he was just a really smart guy.

which calculus would you be in if you took BC calc and got a 5, then took multi variable calculus this year with As both semesters, plus a linear algebra/differential equations course?

Econ 101 for sure.

does this mean the other econ courses will be just as hard, if not harder?

weed out course doesn’t necessarily imply difficulty of class but difficulty of A

“which calculus would you be in if you took BC calc and got a 5, then took multi variable calculus this year with As both semesters, plus a linear algebra/differential equations course?”

Then you would be done with the intro maths. There are all sorts of different math classes you could take next, depending on what direction you want to go in. Here’s the course descriptions: [UM Mathematics-Undergrad Courses](UM Mathematics-Undergrad Courses)

By the way, that only holds if you get transfer credit for 215, 216, and 217. If you don’t, you will want to take whichever of those you didn’t receive transfer credit for, or an honors version of it.

“weed out course doesn’t necessarily imply difficulty of class but difficulty of A”

Most would say the difficulty of the class is the same thing as the difficulty of getting any specific grade. Weeder classes are generally harder to get a B in than a B non weeder class as well, harder to pass too.

lol at people who say Econ 101…

weed out classes are just the pre-reqs for popular paths ppl wanna take, like pre-med, business, etc.

to answer your other question, upper level econ classes do get harder, but it becomes easier to get a better grade in them since the curves are much more lenient.

Wow. So I’m guessing Calc II, Bio 171, and Chem 125/126/130 wouldn’t be the best idea for a first semester schedule?

Can someone tell me how hard this would be?

Yosup, my roommate took MATH 116, BIO 172 and 173, and CHEM 125, 126, and 130 last semester. He was able to pull off a B- average in these classes, but then again, I don’t know how hard he worked.

yosup,

You’ll be fine

Wait, seriously? Or are you just hatin’ cause I wanna take hard classes :[

You’ll be fine. Just stay on top of everything.

yosup, those are very doable courses; Calc II, Bio 171, and Chem 125/126/130 is about 14 credits(?), are u gonna take an engineering course as well? They should be manageable, even if it’s 18 credits total. Go for it.
