Weed-out

What weed-out classes are there for Engineering( particularly Chem. E)?

Anything I should watch out for?

Gen Chem (known as CHEM1021 and 1022) and Organic Chem (forgetting the numbers) Both Calculus I and II are also weed-out if you don’t have the AP scores. Oh and the Physics you guys need is a weed-out class too. Pretty much all the beginning science/math classes are because averages on the tests in there are usually around 60-70%

The curves become much better in the higher up classes I heard.

Drats. I’ll be able to skip Gen Chem and Orgo, and the Calcs, but not the Physics. Any recommendation for a nice prep for them? I currently have a terrible, terrible teacher for Physics.

what do you guys mean by weed out?

A class with a high fail rate that “weeds out” those who won’t survive in higher-level classes.

0.0
that sounds threatening…

In a way it is. :frowning:

My chem professor told my friend that it’s usually a 50% passing rate for the class. For most tests about 3-5 people get perf. scores. And that’s out of 100+ students

SO glad I’m skipping that bullcrap.

For once, I’m happy I’m taking those stupid GCE A-Level tests. I might just get out of Orgo I and II if I can boost my test score one grade higher than last year. If not, I’ll just skip Chem I, II, and Orgo I.

Now the Physics…

Anyhow, how are office hours with professors? Are they terrible with the intro. classes or are they good with them? How about in general?

do the AP/IB credits allow you to skip those weed out classes?

yes norabelle, a bunch of the general classes can be skipped by proficient ap/ib scores.

Are these weed out classes for all freshmen?and does weeding out mean getting kicked out of school?and will a person lets say interested in the arts be denied an opportunity to pursue that degree simply because they stink at physics?

No no no, of course not! This is only referring to classes that you’re required to take in your first 1-2 years for your major, that are really hard. For example: My boyfriend started school as a mechanical engineering major. The first semester, he had to take Physics, Calculus, and Chemistry. He did very poorly in most of his classes and realized that he would rather be an English major afterall.

They’re just classes that are meant to separate the people who really, really want to pursue a tough major like Engineering from the people who only chose that major because their parents wanted them to, they thought it would be lucrative, etc. You don’t get kicked out of school if you don’t do well. You just have to either retake the course or choose some other major.

^^ thanks for that.i think i understand the pushy parents thing
mine wanted me to pursue medicine but not anymore.i just showed them the ridiculous acceptance rates for internationals in american med. Schools and i guess they just got shocked into reality and of course had their egos kinda tamed :)

Ahhh, yeah. These classes are horrible for my prepharm GPA. But it’s ok, I’ll get through it. The professors are generally helpful if you actually go and ask them for help. And to actually find the best professors go to ratemyprofessors.com (or something like it) I know for the U of M there’s a TONNN of reviews. And I’m guessing you guys know about OneStop Class Search too, and Schedulizer, but those are 3 things I always use before registering for anything. This way even if you’re in a weed-out class at least you have either an entertaining or a helpful professor.

whats the OneStop class search and Schedulizer? how do you get to them?

Class Search [Class Search - Search Criteria](http://onestop2.umn.edu/courseinfo/searchcriteria.jsp?institution=UMNTC)

It lets you find the classes you’re looking for, very very handy for everything and especially lib ed. req. classes. It’s sort of similar to the Grad Planner (which lets you plan out your classes for the next several years), but it’s best if you’re looking for a class description or classes for only the next semester.

[Schedulizer: Login](http://www.schedulizer.com/)

Register with your UMN Email. It accesses the class database and when you pick the classes you want to take it makes possible schedules for you. For example I want to take Anatomy, Org. Chem, Psych, and University Writing. I add those classes in and it gives me all the possible combinations those classes can be arranged in. You can also take out some times (like 8AM classes and 6-9 lectures  )

thank you so much! you’re very helpful :)

Another thing: what if you’re like me and have no idea about classes, what to take, what classes are to be avoided, etc…seriously i feel so lost!
