Ive heard that purdue weeds out almost half of the first year engineering students. Is this true? If yes what is the reason? Is engineering extremely compititive?

my friend in engineering told me it's more like a third, but Purdue does attempt to weed out the students who cannot hack freshman chemistry and calculus. Unfortunately, most other science majors are also caught in the crossfire. But, hey, I survived MA 165/166 and ducked the beast that is CHM115/116. The weeding out is mostly to force the first years to really consider their choice and whether it is something they are truly capable of studying.
