Week 1 NASS folks post your experiences here

Folks who attended week one post your impressions, comments, advice, and overall thoughts here. Please make it helpful for others.

I dont think they get done until tomorow. But hopefully they post some of there experineces when they get back.

just wanted to get it done while i remembered it

haha sounds like your like me got to do things right when you think about it other wise you forget. Cant wait to hear from them.

We should be hearing some replies soon. :D

I picked up my duaghter this afternoon at the academy. The wrap up session was held in Mahan Hall because Alumni Hall was being set up for tomorrow's Change of Command.

I have a CD full of photos and videos for Days 2, 3, 4, and 5. I am going to ask my son to upload them on a file server somewhere, then I will post the links.

My daughter had a blast. She said that the only things she would have brough that she didn't was wash cloths, more underwear, and a watch.

This year the candidates weren't issued Under Armour -- that's a bummer. Four T-shirts, Navy sweats, blue mesh shirts, water bottle, ball cap, book bag were provided this year.

A couple of additional observations:

[ul][]My daughter stated that most but not all of the candidates who are in JROTC are obnoxious and arrogant.
[]It seemed like all of the candidates have Type A personalities and everybody wanted to be in charge.[/ul]

GA - I think I posted this on another thread, but just in case let me do it here. Your daughter is spot-on about Jrtoc candidates and their attitude. My daughter who is working NASS said in their briefing before they started...was that they were specifically to NOTE in their written evals of the candidates about their arrogance especially if they came from JROTC. They said it isn't necessarily a critical reason for a non-acceptance - but the Admin folk do want it noted.

And about Type A's, being a Type A personality myself who has been frequently accused in my lifetime of being a Type A on steriods most of the time, please assure all non-TypeA young people who are hoping to go USNA that they KNOW the Navy needs all kinds and not to try and be something they aren't while at NASS. They should recognize they are there to work together as a team with their Squad, and personally do their best. Sometimes it is a quiet leader that is the most effective. It all depends on the situation.

Can't wait to hear other's feedback.

My kiddo reported that today is a HUGE day at USNA with not only a Supe's Change of Command, but a promotion for the incoming Supe from 2 stars to 3. She told me that the place is rocking with brass, parties, flourishes, etc.

What did most people wear in on the first day? A polo? or a t-shirt?

Hey everyone--

I just got back from NASS Session 1! It was even more fun/challenging than I expected, and I hope everybody who has the chance to go enjoys it as much as I did.

I saw a thread for NASS has already been started! I just wanted to open this up for specific questions, and I'll do my best to answer them for anybody. Of course, I'll only try to answer them in order to satisfy your curiosity--wouldn't want to spoil everything in advance!

In response to tielir999--it doesn't really matter what you wear on the first day--either a polo or t-shirt would be acceptable. After you sign-in at Dahlgren, you are immediately escorted to your room where you change into the provided clothing. If you check in early enough, you change into PT clothes and you can participate in some light intermural games they have going. If you get there at 1430 or later, they will just have you change into your Company's colors and any shorts/pants, and you will have the opportunity to unpack all of your stuff.

Hope that answers your question!

Again, I hope everybody who has the opportunity to go to NASS enjoys themselves!! It's a great chance to see what it would be like to really be accepted.

Any/all questions will try to be answered!

My daughter wore shorts, a t-shirt, and flip-flops.

I just returned yesterday from NASS. It was truly amazing. Great people tough work, and a really good idea of what the academy is all about. If you have any questions for me, feel free to post them here.

Do you need to bring Linens? I know you have to bring a pillow.

First day, wear comfortable clothes. Please bring an old pair of shoes for Sea Trials. Also bring shorts/jeans other than athletic shorts.

Bring everything the letter says. Show up in shape.

I'm having problems fitting this all in my bag... :p

You should bring at least a twin bed cover/sheets--or if you don't want to bring those a sleeping bag or something of the sort will suffice [although packing space may not allow that.] But your room just has a mattress, so you need something to put over it. Also, the rooms varied greatly in temperature--some rooms stayed very warm, and others freezing...so be prepared for both.

BRING AN EXTRA PAIR OF SHOES FOR SEA TRIALS! Make sure they are just cheap shoes that you won't mind getting VERY VERY dirty. But you should also be able to run in them, and be comfortable enough to wear them for a whole day.

And alarm clock is also a great thing to pack, along with LOTS of underwear and socks. [Most people wear about 2 sets each day because they change after PT in the morning because they are all sweaty.]

Keep the questions coming!

QUESTION needed answered in the next 20 minutes so I can get some sleep... How many bags did everyone have? One? Two?

I have one bag, but I'm considering carrying a mostly-empty backpack for the extra things I'm going to bring home. My actual bag is definitely... full. There's no way I'm fitting in a sweatshirt from the Naval Academy...

What was your "social" event?? Was there even one this year?

Im pumped leave at 550 am tomorow. Probably should be sleeping but going over last minute check lists. Cant wait!

Haha! I'm still packing! What are you wearing tomorrow? We're leaving at about 8-ish... I'm from Philadelphia, so it's only about a 2-3 hr drive. I plan on arriving right on time. :p

By the way, my name is Gia. Maybe we'll see each other! :D
