Week of Welcome

Is it really worth paying for? The freshman move into the dorms before classes start, but surely not everyone is going to pay and attend this Week of Welcome Orientation thing? For those who don’t participate, do you just hang out in the dorms for the week?

I was wondering the same thing?

me three. any1 wanna help out? please?

FWIW, my son went to SOAR - he was not impressed - but heard many good things about WOW. So much so that he declined an all expense paid trip to the Gorge (Oregon) to go kite boarding. I’d get the specific reasons why - I think partying was mentioned quite a bit - but he’s, you guessed it, off kite boarding in the Delta for his final weekend of freedom.

One of the things I heard was that there was alcohol and everyone got wasted. Besides that, I’ve heard you do silly activities (discuss the Flight book, singing songs, finding your classes, etc.) I was told however, that the benefit to WOW is getting to know other people. I guess that isn’t a bad thing, but I could that for free by myself.

WOW is a great way to meet other students and familiarize yourself with SLO before classes officially begin. This is a school sponsored event and alcohol is prohibited. Yes, some do go party and get plastered on their own volition, but those are after-hours activities unsanctioned by the school and independent of WOW.

WOW is not worth the bother/expense unless you REALLY need to make social contacts.
If you are that much into the social scene, you won’t do well academically at CAL POLY anyway in any of the tough majors such as Engineering. You will be gone within a year.

Just move in and if you have any questions contact your RA or your Department advising office.

^What an elitist and stupid thing to say.

Everyone I know at Cal Poly says go to WOW, it’s a great experience and really sets a strong foundation for the next four years. And, despite their obsession with the “social scene,” not one of them has left the school.

What do the freshman who don’t attend WOW do? Do they hang around town?

My sister is a WOW leader. I know she and her partner WOW leader have spent a lot of time planning a great week for their group. The group is touring downtown, going kayaking, doing a beach day, a BBQ, tie dying shirts etc, as well as all the on campus stuff. She told me that it is a great way to get to know the campus and the community. Your WOW group is based on where you live, so it is also a great way to meet people living in your dorm. I believe there are over 700 WOW leaders who have volunteered to be leaders.

To each his own I guess. Hope everyone has a good time “tie-dying shirts” and all.

Reza what are you trying to do…? Look like you are above WOW on collegeconfidential.com… Dang you are soooo cool!
Tie-dying shirts > Trying to act cool on a nerdy college blog

The only reason people shouldn’t do WOW is if they don’t have the funds to pay for it, otherwise do it. Every person i’ve ever asked has said that WOW is fun and beneficial.

so are the WoW groups divided by dorm? How do they do this?

i would highly recommend the incoming freshmen to attend WoW, it’s an entire week of just fun without having to worry about schoolwork (yet). if i could do it all over again, i would.

Ok, well I signed up anyway. I mean, what harm could it do and from what it seems everyone else is doing. The WOW leaders better be cool though.

Hey Compwiz were you able to still sign up ? when did you sign up? I hope its not too late because I want to do it also for the reason that most people will be attending and it actually sounds fun.

I signed up yesterday. After September 4 (which it already is) you pay an extra $25. I think you can still sign up. Do it quickly.

My son is a sophmore - he loved WOW. He made a lot of friends and it really helped him get to know the town and campus. They went kyaking, bonfires on the beach, etc. He is a WOW leader for Sierra Madre tower 1 and he & his co-leader have planned a fun week. Highly recommend it for incoming freshman.

WOW is definitely worth it! I had a ton of fun and I wish it lasted longer! My group got along well, and while I doubt we’ll regularly hang out all together, it’s good to get to know a few more people so that you’ll recognize some more faces on campus. Also, they divide you into WOW groups based on which dorm you’re in, so chances are you’ll see people from your WOW group quite often after WOW is over. There really is no reason to move in a week early if you’re not doing WOW. You’ll be bored cause everyone will be super busy with fun WOW activities and you’ll just feel really left out. I just finished with WOW less than a week ago and it was a blast! My group went kayaking, attended an improve comedy show, and hypnotist just to name a few things we did. WOW is a very unique program and a great way to start college.
