Weekends at Elon

My d has narrowed her choices to two colleges. Her big concern/question for Elon is what do students do for entertainment at Elon? She will not have a car for at least Freshman and Sophmore year due to the distance from home. Your feedback is much appreciated.

I am writing to let you know that my son graduated in 08. His brother hopefully will also choose to be part of this freshman class. Ok- my oldest did not have a car till junior year at Elon. The Shuttle available was fine to get into Burlington. I think that it has even improved. There was plenty for him to do on and just off campus, that he never complained about a lack of things to do. Most students stay on Campus which is nice.

My S is a freshmen at Elon this year and between everything that he does on campus and enjoying/studying with his new great friends I worry more about if he is getting any sleep than if he’s bored. When he and friends wanted to attend a John Mayer concert in 20 miles off campus they did what all college students do. Posted to all his friends on facebook “we need a ride / car”, and had transportation for everyone within 15 minutes. If he wanted something more formal he could have rented one of the Zip Cars on campus…

Elon is a very active campus and as a residential campus does a great job having something for everyone. My impression is that friendships are made and kept at Elon because it’s a involved school and that includes students, faculty and administration… They call it the Elon Bubble for a reason (no one wants to leave).

I miss my Son and had my worries at first (would have been a bit worried at any school) but couldn’t be happier with his choice and what he has done with the opportunities that Elon provides.

Congratulations to your Daughter.

Thanks so much. My d was very appreciative of the info.

My daughter seems to have plenty to do on campus as far as entertainment. Go to Elon/e-net/student center/events to see what’s happening (except this week is spring break). 2. There are a few options within walking distance of the campus in the small town of Elon right next to the school -check out the Lighthouse. 3. Sign up for the ZipCar and you can rent a car right on campus - we’re from out of state and the zipcar has been a great option. 4. The school runs the BioBus - a shuttle that takes students to the local shopping/movies. 5. There are school sporting events, concerts, shows and a great gym/pool on campus.

Thanks so much I will have my d look at that website. I am amazed the university operates the tavern. I am so used to Indiana University which has such strict rules regarding alcohol. Under 21’s can not even sit with their parents in the bar area. I am sure she has looked before but will redirect her now that she is in the decision making phase. We too would be out of state and far away so the zip cars are a big plus. I know Indiana has also has zip cars - wish they would have had them when my son was a freshman/sophmore. Thanks again for your help!

My daughter is a freshman and loves Elon, has never had a shortage of activities. She felt like her entire dorm floor was like extended family by the middle of first term. She has used the zip car a few times, and several of her friends have cars at Elon, so transportation has not been an issue. She has not used the bus as much as I think she could, but I know it does go to the local shopping area. She was a bit disappointed that so many of her friends went Greek second term, as they were very busy with sorority-only rushing activities, but that seems to have slowed down a bit, and she is now on Spring break with five of her Elon friends. She is considering going Greek next year, but is waiting to see how much she needs to belong to a sorority to stay as active as she likes. I would really recommend attending one of the summer orientation experiences, as she felt like she was connected to a big group of kids even before starting in Fall semester, and this group has remained friends throughout the year. So far, like I said, no shortage of activities.

My daughter will be graduating from ELon this May and has never complained about not having enough to do. She didn’t have a car her freshman year, but plenty of her friends did so she could get rides just about anytime she wanted. I think my youngest will go there in a coupole of years. Good luck. As parents we have nothing but good things to say about “our” 4 yers there.
