Ok so now that it is college decision time - and we've all been accepted/WL/rejected and laughed/screamed/cried what not - I'm getting excited about possibly attending Wes!

Of course, the one thing standing in my way of being 100% sure is fricking Middletown, CT (lol). How are the weekends at Wes, is there stuff to do? Do people travel to bigger cities ever? I don't drink so I was hoping to hike/bike/do something outdoorsy. I know the music/performace scene is awesome, but at the same time I have an iPod so...

Any input would be fantastic! Thanks!

P.S. One more question...you know how people at Brown call themselves Brunonians, Yale is Yalies, etc, what's it for Wes (if it's anything)?

I am curious too for my D. She is pretty much set on Wes - she loves the classes, the theater, the music, Foss Hill, etc., but I wonder if it is too much of a party school for her. From some of the forums, videos on line, Zonker Harris Day, etc., it looks like lots of drinking and I guess smoking going on. Is it just red cup parties on weekends? What about the kids who don’t drink or smoke illegal substances?
Any current or recent Wes students out there (or parents of) who can help?
Thanks!

Hey gonzo14, although I haven’t actually decided on Wes yet (although I’m 95% sure I’m going there next year), I have talked to a ton of current admitted students who have already decided on Wes and surprisingly, out of those I met, more than half said they don’t drink or smoke and don’t intend to. This was a big relief for me since I don’t drink or smoke either. I know there is something always going on too and that you can still party and have fun without partaking in drinking/smoking. In addition, when I stayed overnight during a visit, I went to 2 parties and I was completely welcomed as a non-drinker. Some just asked me why I didn’t drink and I just told them I wasn’t really interested and they respected it, end of question. So I don’t think your daughter has to worry.

You can party as much or as little as you want - you are guaranteed to have others like you, no matter who you are. That’s what makes the social scene at Wes so awesome. Want the traditional frat/keg scene? Want to do drugs? You can find it. Want to play video games/board games? Want to just chill and watch a movie? There are people doing that too. Want to sip wine and discuss the world around you? Plenty are doing that too.

anyone else please chime in. I don’t smoke/drink either. I’d like more input b/c ***** and other review sites often portray Wes as a school where (quoting them): “bring weed to make friends”. Also, does everyone find themselves satisfied with the events going on - or does Middletown and only 3,000 potential friends get too small? Thanks!

Yeah. I don’t smoke, drink or do drugs. I wouldn’t object to a drink, but for personal reasons I just never got used to the taste of alcohol. Its actually preferable if this substance use culture isn’t very visible.

What do you mean by visible, and why do you care?

You can still go to parties and not drink/smoke. In general all official/organized events are substance free–go to wesleying.org if you want to see what kind of events happen regularly on campus. As per my experience drugs/alcohol are usually not a the center of the party or the only destination of the night. There is less of a strict dichotomy between People Who Party/People Who Don’t. it’s more complex than that.
