Weekends?

Just visited for Open House. Can anyone comment on how many students go home on weekends? Is it quiet on campus? Couldn't get a good feel yesterday. Any other input is welcome!

Thanks!

yes…many students do go home on the weekends. Also keep in mind after the first or second year…many students move off campus to narragansett…something we were not aware of…that said…my son loves it there and we feel getting a good education in his comm major.

Thank you ptdooey for the reply. Yes, we stayed in a B&B in Narragansett and in fact, there were students living there in addition to the guests! They told us that the residence halls are mostly triples and so the quicker they move “down the line”, the better. My D is interested in the Ocean Engineering major and so many of her classes at that point will be on the Bay campus so I think that wouldn’t bother her too much. It is beautiful down there. Can you comment on the social aspect in residence living? Did your son choose a LLC for freshman year? Anything else we should be aware of? Thanks so much for the parent’s perspective :)

He enjoyed freshman year on campus even with 3 big boys in a tiny room. By second semester they were down to two. That year they seemed to hang in the halls at night. He is involved with their leadership program and joined a frat which kept him busy …and played rugby. He has excelled at that school. We are looking at schools now for my second child and URI is on the list. I do think however because of the weekends being quiet on campus…you have to be the type of student to reach out for extracurricular activities…they don’t come to you. ( not my second ones nature but perfect for my son). We love the area and we love to visit. Stay at Hampton Inn in south kingstown…very very clean and a nice free breakfast.glad to help a prospective student.

I have a current freshman student at URI… we are out of state and she has not come home at all. Many students stay on campus… and many go home for the weekend. They do room out of state students with other out of state students… and in state with in state. We were told that they do this because of so many local students leaving for the weekends. Our daughter is not into the party scene, but has managed to find plenty to do on the weekends - she always has friends to hang out with!! She has only 1 roommate and lives in the dorm for CELS students.

My S is in his second year of Ocean Engineering and doing well. Even though we are in-state and he has a car he can use, we elected not to let him take it to school. We didn’t need the extra charge for him to have a car on campus plus the additional concern of him becoming a “taxi-service”. That being said, he came home about every 3rd weekend last year and has been home only once this year. He’s very happy staying on campus. He was housed in the freshman engineering dorm last year with one other person. He and his roommate formed some good friendships and elected to live in a dorm (Heathman) that has two rooms with 3 people each sharing one bathroom. It’s kind of funny to imagine six guys organizing their morning routines but I suppose it’s a good life lesson. My boy is not a party guy so he prefers to keep himself busy on weekends hanging with his friends, playing some touch football in front of the dorm, some video games in his room, or maybe a round of Humans vs. Zombies on the quad………please don’t have me try to explain that one! Hope this helps.

Thank you! You all have been so helpful and reassuring! Good to know that she can get by without the car for at least a year. We are from the South and so it was quite a change for us to venture up to RI, but we both loved the location and the weather! If she doesn’t come home, I am happy as a clam to come and visit her! Friday we had rain and Saturday was gorgeous! It was fun to see the campus come alive around noon, because before that in the late morning it was very quiet while most of the students still slept  We loved that everyone we passed chanted “come to URI!” and I can really see our D there. I was a little concerned about the “party” rep, but you’ve put my mind at ease and I think she’ll find that anywhere, frankly. It sounds like the LLC for engineering would be a good place for her to start and form her social circle. And I doubt there are many southern girls in the program. I will share this info. with her! Thanks again!

Oh, another quick question about getting around for Townie89… how does your son get back and forth from the Bay campus? I understand that there is a shuttle? Are there students going back and forth often? How about the winter weather?

Yes, My S has mentioned some sort of transportation that’s available from the school to the Bay campus. I don’t know how often it runs so I’ll check w him. In reference to winter weather and getting around URI, I’m not sure since we really didn’t have a “winter” last year…we’ll just have to see…maybe starting in a few days when Sandy comes round :(

Thank you so much. Just saw pics on TWC of Narragansett Bay and the Towers :frowning: wow, quite a shock after being there last weekend… they interviewed the owners of the Coast Guard House, a very popular restaurant there that has been heavily damaged. :frowning:

I hope they are all safe! When you hear from your son, I’d be curious how the students fared on the Kingston campus. & how the university helped prepare them. Do they have power?
