i visited on a saturday early last month, and i found the campus to be fairly empty. is this because everyone goes home? how social is UCLA on the weekends?

It's true that many people do go home on weekends but there's still many people around they're either in their rooms studying, out in westwood, or spending time in Santa Monica at the beach (on nice days such as today.) But, you did say that you came early last month which was probably around finals. Around finals time the campus tends to look more empty since everyone is furiously studying for exams.

Is this how the typical weekend is at UCLA? And just curious, what kind of campus activities goes on?

That's more or less a typical weekend. And, I wouldn't know where to begin to start describing campus activities - there are soo many! There's sporting events (most of them UCLA students can get into for free with their Bruin Cards,); if you decide to join a club, they're bound to do many activites on weekends and throughout the week; you can play IM sports though those are typically during the week; Floors and Halls also do many activities. There's so many options that sometimes its difficult just to decide what to do.

Wait... "Early last month" was right before final exams.
The UCLA campus is supposed to be dead during Dead Week.
