Weekly spending money?

Hi everyone!

I will be attending Wellesley in the fall and I had a quick question: does anyone know how much money on average is usually necessary per week? I'm going to work my butt off this summer with two jobs so that come fall, I'll have some spending money. However, I'm just wondering how much might be adequate..

Thanks and I can't tell you how excited I am to meet you all! :)

Maybe this forum isn't too helpful in terms of asking current students questions. oh well!

For all of those attending in the fall, do any of you plan on working part time or are your parents helping to contribute to your spending money? Just wondering.. thanks!

This question has come up often on the Parent's Forum, and the answer is all over the place, depending on the school, the activities, etc. It seems to me for most kids who have full room and board paid, and a good stash of necessities like shampoo, school supplies, about $250 a month with a $500 safety net put into the account for some emergency (broken glasses, big opportunity, etc) That should get you through till Thanksgiving or winter break when you can discuss whether it is too generous or too little based on personal needs and activities. At that time you could revamp the meal plan, bring a big box of any supplies that are too horribly expensive and inconvenient to replenish locally too.

Thanks jamimom, your advice was very helpful!

i am a student at wellesley, and i personally didn't spend much last year but yea i'd say 200 a month is plenty...when i was at boarding school, thats what i got and i never used it all...this year i asked my parents not to give me any spending money because i worked during the summer and i wanted to do my part ;) but my friends seem to do ok with anywhere from 150-300 a month :-D

I definitely don't plan on working my first year. However, I'm looking into finding some really interesting internships eventually. Maybe in the city? I'm not sure yet. My parents and I have struck the deal that they'll pay for tuition, books, etc and that I'll pay for any other expenses (spending money). But, yep-I'm working this Summer so that come Fall I can hit up Boston and Cambridge for shopping, good restaurants, and whatnot.

Yeah, I have to work my first year - stupid Wellesley college work or something with my fin aid, but I think that about 200 a month sounds fairly reasonable. don't you?
