weight of math, reading and writing in sat

I recently gave a SAT practice test on khan academy on which I got 1220 marks. I got 730 in math,230 in reading and 260 in writing. On scale 10-40 I got 36.5 in math which is fine, 23 in reading and 26 in writing. then I went to big future to check which college I can get but there I can enter between 100-800 in reading and writing each.
So I am confused that these reading & writing marks are out of 400 or 800

@Makashima I am extremely confused by your post, and it seems like you are confused too.

The *current * SAT has a reading and math section, each of which is on a scale of 200-800. So the maximum score is 1600. There is also an optional essay section.

MITer94 please read my post carefully. I know that SAT is of 1600 marks but big future is confusing me

Please don’t consider attending a US college unless you improve your English language skills.

@Makashima Big Future is slightly out-of-date. The old SAT had three sections (200-800) with a maximum of 2400.

Agree with lostaccount; a 230 or 260 on reading/writing puts you at the bottom 1 or 2 percent of test-takers. You need to improve your English skills if you wish to study at a respectable US university.

So this means Reading and writing are out of 400 each. Then this doesn’t make 230,260 bad. And with these marks big future says I can get admission in Stanford. So this might not be that bad.

@Makashima No, that is completely false. Where did you find that reading and writing are out of 400?

Also, no. On the old SAT, a 230 and 260 would throw you in the automatic reject pile. On the new SAT, even a 490 (=230+260) would likely be considered very weak, and probably also get you rejected automatically. Additionally, you need much more than test scores to get admitted into Stanford or any other competitive US university.

thanks,If you don’t mind could you tell me what other things are required then test scores .Also are 12th Board marks required with SAT for Indians

@Makashima Typically, the following are required for most 4-year universities in the US:

*SAT or ACT scores (may or may not require the essay). You might be able to substitute the TOEFL, which I recommend you do.
*SAT subject tests, if applicable
*high school transcripts
*letters of recommendation
*essay or personal statement
*online application, including a bunch of things about you (courses taken, EC’s, awards, financial info, etc.).
*maybe some other important things which I can’t think of atm…

Different universities have different requirements, and may only require a subset of the above.

As for 12th board, I’m not completely familiar with the Indian system of education, so I can’t answer that. I know that in the US at least, some schools do ask for transcripts up to and including 12th grade (usually to make sure you didn’t slack off). But you shouldn’t worry about that - if they need your transcripts, they will let you know.

If you are applying to more selective US universities, you really need to work on your English proficiency, as lostaccount said. Some schools ask international students to provide a proof of English proficiency.

@MITer94 I forgot to mention earlier the answer to your question
Where did you find that reading and writing are out of 400?
As I told previously I gave practice test on khan academy in which I got 230 in reading and 260 in writing. they gave me 23 and 26 points on scale 10-40 respectively. So from this I deduce that reading and writing each are out of 400

The reading & writing scores get added together and multiplied by 10, so that the max verbal score is 800.

The max math score is 800.

The max total score is 800+800=1600.

@Makashima Okay, sorry about that. But yes, reading and verbal are reported together and are out of 800. So I presume your verbal score is 490?

A 490 is not terrible, but still seems very weak for Stanford. You can look at data on Stanford’s entering freshman class here (note: this is for the old SAT, where reading and writing were both out of 800).

The revised SAT is still quite new, but I’d imagine you will want to shoot for similar scores.

MITer94 could you tell me what is GPA and ACT

My comment about English language skills was not based on the test scores. It was based on the inability to communicate in English. If you can’t read, write and communicate at a college level in English you should not attend an American college or university regardless of your scores and/or grades. There are not two different standards-one for internationals and a higher one for US residents. If you can’t write at a college level, don’t attend a US college.

@Makashima You should easily be able to look this up without having us to tell you. Resourcefulness is another key thing you’ll need if you wish to study at Stanford or any other US university.

I understand what GPA is but I am confused about ACT.So please tell me what ACT is.

@Makashima Similar in content and purpose with the SAT. Most universities that require standardized tests often require the SAT or ACT, but not both (even though you can certainly take both).

MITer94 the stanford link [http://admission.stanford.edu/basics/selection/profile.html] you messaged previously says ACT score also play crucial role in admission in Stanford.

@Makashima Stanford requires the ACT (with writing) or the SAT (with writing) ([source](http://admission.stanford.edu/application/freshman/testing.html)). You do not have to take both.

What is your revised SAT score? If it is 730 math, 490 reading+writing for a total of 1220/1600, you will desperately need to improve your reading and writing. Otherwise, you will have no chance at Stanford.

Is IELTS also required
