Weight of work experience in Ivy League admissions

<p>Having a job, any job, is better than having none at all.</p>

<p>Even if it’s at a fast food joint. The job itself shows initiative, responsibility, and time management skills.</p>

<p>A kid who has a 3.6-3.8 GPA, 1900+ SAT, two sports, multiple volunteer hours, and works 8-12 hours a week (even at a fast food place) is going to look a hell of a lot better than a kid who has all of that and no job.</p>

<p>Usually those hours are done on the weekend, which shows tremendous maturity and responsibility on the applicant’s part.</p>

<p>My parents needed a supplemental source of income this year, and even with all of my EC’s and AP classes, I stepped up to help them. Sure it’s an entry level job, but I work with college students AND college graduates who are getting a supplemental source of income while they search for a better job.</p>

<p>Some people don’t have a professor daddy that will allow them to do research. Some people need to earn money. Some people don’t have the luxury to pick and choose opportunities.</p>
