Weighted blanket?

I read an article today in the WaPo that a study is supposed to show that sleeping with a weighted blanket can increase melatonin (article at https://wapo.st/3iGmurR )

I didn’t really know weighted blankets were a thing although I’ve seen articles about them occasionally. So I’m looking for anecdotes. Do you use one? Do you think it helps?

My wife has been using one for the past 2 years and it’s helped her sleep a lot better.

I would suggest try before you buy, if possible. I got one for my daughter because she thought it would be calming, but she didn’t like how it felt (hot and confining). I’m sure they vary also.

Hope you find something that works for you!

The bearaby woven ones give the weight without the heat retention of the comforters. They originally also had a comforter with a high quality duvet which we have, but it is a beast to move and it is hot. They no longer make them, but there are others.

We have a few of woven ones from over the years…I buy one on sale for the couch, but they migrate to the bedrooms magically and I never see it again. They have held up well. The first one is starting to show some wear.

They say you can wash them, but I have always been afraid to put them in my washing machine at home - I am afraid it would be too heavy.

My husband was horrified by the price, but guess who sleeps under one every night now?? Lol

Bought one for our daughter when she was about 12 and it really helped her sleep much more soundly! We have a not too heavy one on our bed and I love it!!

I bought one recently for my 34 year old daughter. I just got a lap blanket size because she wanted it more for relaxing in the evening on the couch as opposed to covering her bed.

When I did all my research I came to the conclusion that while they often recommend a blanket that weighs 10% of your body weight that that is often a bit much for newbies to weighted blankets so I got her a 10 pound one. I could not pay Bearaby prices but she wanted something that also looked good since it would be in her living area - I purchased this one that has a lot of good reviews:

I’ve used one for a few years and really like it. My kids have them too. I think mine is from Costco and the kids’ are from Bed Bath & Beyond.

I think this is one of those things that works for some people but not for others. The idea of it makes me claustrophobic but my 21 yr old has one and likes it. I toss and turn all night getting comfortable and throw the covers off and back on getting too hot and too cold (occasional hot flashes). I don’t think I would like one at all but if you think it would work for you it might be worth checking out. Target has some that aren’t too expensive.

I got my son one when he was going thru cancer treatment. It helped him let go of anxieties, relax and get sleep.

I love mine in the winter when my room is really (really) cold, but it is too hot in the summer even if I leave my feet out.

I have a twin sized one and make my bed (queen) the regular way and just put the weighted blanket over the top of everything and on top of me. I can’t imagine how big and heavy the full or queen sized ones are. This one is pretty heavy, I think 15 lbs?, and it’s hard to lift out of the way when I change the sheets.

If you don’t have a 4.0 unweighted blanket forget about sleeping in an Ivy League dorm

Thought I’d post a follow-up about the blanket. I ended up getting this one https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07SBYFZFP which was recommended online. I tried it a few nites and then returned it. It seemed nicely made and had a good heft (I got the 20lb blanket) but I didn’t sleep any different than I did before. Glad weighted blankets help some people but I guess I’m not one of them.

I’ve heard they’re good for people that have trouble sleeping or sleep apnea. My dog does a pretty good job of making any normal blanket a “weighted” one though.

My 25 year old has had some for like 10 years. Loves it.

Weighted blanket recall

Any new thoughts on weighted blankets? I often don’t sleep well, and I’m thinking of putting one on my Christmas list. I thought I slept better with lighter weight covers, but maybe I’m wrong.
If I get one it needs to be twin sized, because my husband sleeps like a baby and a weighted blanket would just annoy him.

I feel claustrophobic under a weighted blanket, but my daughter loves them. The good thing is they are no longer a new ridiculously expensive thing. I’ve gotten her twin sizes for $20. At that price I keep one here for when she visits.

If you think you might like one, give it a try.

I like mine when it is really cold, but too hot for at least half the year.

I do keep it on the foot of my bed most of the year as it keeps the sheets from riding up (now that mattresses are one piece and you can’t tuck the sheets in!)

When it is cold, I do love the weight.
