Are you white? If not, Gates Millennium.

The more money a scholarship offers, the more attractable it is. Therefore there will be more competition in terms of the number of students applying and the quality of applicant (higher academic achieving students). Typically smaller scholarships are less competitive and therefore an applicant has a better chance of winning.

that’s true if the scholarship is competitive in nature.

However, there are schools that over some large scholarships to EVERYONE who has the req’d stats…so no competition…if you meet the req’ts, then you get the money.

Without being a minority, low income, or having really high stats, it would be hard for this student to find private 4 year scholarships of substantial amounts. Many private scholarships are only for Frosh year, have a need component, or some other req’t.

Thank you, everyone!

to answer some questions… I am white, so I’m not a minority. And I feel like I’m making it seem like I’m dirt poor. I’m not lower class, I’m middle class, my family lives in a nice house in a great neighborhood. So, my family usually does have decent money. It’s only that the past couple years have been terrible for my father. He is on his 3rd job in less than 2 years and isn’t making much lately. He’s a financial advisor, so he doesn’t have a set pay. How much he gets payed is based on the business he receives, and lately it has been bad. So for all we know, my father could be doing very well by the time I have to start worrying about paying for college. That’s why this is so difficult to figure out, because we have absolutely no idea what my family’s situation will be in a year.

Right now, I looked at 'Bamas scholarships like someone mentioned, and for all of them I would need a 3.5 cumulitive gpa. Unweighted, my gpa is 3.39 right now, and even if I get a 4.0 this next semester It will not go up to a 3.5. So that’s a bummer.

Do you think it is very possible for me to receive a very large scholarship?

What are some other schools that offer giant scholarships like Alabama does?

I don’t believe I qualify for QuestBridge. I don’t think my family made less than $60,000 this past year

Bama takes the WEIGHTED GPA.

You said that you have a weighted GPA of 3.7…that’s enough.

now, you need the 30 ACT or better

Bama takes the WEIGHTED GPA.

You said that you have a weighted GPA of 3.7…that’s enough.

now, you need the 30 ACT or better

======

Wow! Is that given to everyone that qualifies with those grades and scores?

And the site says that a 30-31 on the ACT gets me 2/3 tuition for 4 years, a 32-33 is full tuition.

So it looks like I’d need a bit of practice, still possibly do-able though.

Yes…the Univ site says that BUT…the engineering scholarship ADDS to that scholarship…

From the College of Engineering…

Students who have a 30-31 ACT or 1330-1390 SAT (math and verbal scores only) and at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA will receive a tuition supplement to bring their University-level scholarship offer up to the value of tuition. In addition, they will receive $2,500 per year for four years.

I did not know it was possible for me to obtain full tuition ANYWHERE. And Univ of Alabama is a good school, too!

If anyone knows any other schools that offer similar scholarships, that would be great to know! I’m going to do some looking around, myself, as well.

Thank you so very much, everyone!

the only thing about Alabama that’s bothering me is that all the reviews about it make it seem like it’s just a party school and if you’re looking for a quality education and job placement after college then don’t go there.

otherwise, i love the sports atmosphere and overall location (i love the south). and it could be very affordable for me.

i just want to make sure that im going to go to school somewhere that i can set myself up for success after college. but i know i may not be able to be too picky.

Do you really think that graduates don’t get jobs after graduating? Don’t you think parents would stop paying if that were true?

I have one son who graduated from there last year. He’s now in a PhD program at at Top 20 school. Do you think he would have been accepted if he hadn’t had a quality education?

My younger son is a junior there…majoring in ChemE, but he’s also pre-med. He’ll be applying to med schools. Bama has a high acceptance rate to med schools. Do you think that would be true if med schools felt that the education wasn’t good?

I don’t put much on student-written reviews. First, who knows who wrote them…could be a student from a rival school. Secondly, who cares if some kids party? Kids party at all schools. However, many kids don’t.

that is very true… and possibly i could qualify for honors classes to get the best education possible.

the only negatives i have for this school is the party party atmosphere and how far away it is from home. i dont drink at all, i think its disgusting, but im sure its not like ill be the only one that doesnt do any of that. and it would pretty much be a full day’s train ride to get from Naperville, IL to Tuscaloosa. but that will feel good to be independent.

as for the postives… obviously it could be very affordable for me. im a HUGE sports fan, borderline obsessed. and ive always wanted to go to a school with sports tradition. also, i absolutely love the south. the people, the weather, the overall atmosphere, i love it all. AND back to the sports topic, im a major major major Houston Astros fan (look at my name), id be closer to my team and other fans :). back to a serious note, im sure since the engineering program there isnt HUGE, the student to faculty ratio is great. it would be a fun school to go to, even though i dont party much it seems like it has a great social atmosphere.

i got a 30 on my ACT i took in february so i will qualify for the full tuition + 2500 a year from Alabama

Congrats…

If you do engineering you’ll qualify for free tuition and 2500 per year.

However, I wouldn’t rest on my laurels. Test again. It never hurts to have a better score.

You seem ambitious and willing to work hard. I can see that you are doing the research that is necessary to find a good college that you can afford. Before giving up on Purdue, I would suggest that you contact their admissions department for more information on how they determine scholarship eligibility and how they handle weighted GPA’s.

I’ve talked to a few people that are either attending Purdue right now or are going there next year, including someone that had a 4.3gpa 35 ACT + crazy amounts of extra work and services, hes still paying more than 30k a year to go there out of pocket. my other friend’s #s were pretty much idential to mine and he is paying full, 40k a year out of pocket.

Purdue is going to be visiting my high school in a few days to meet with students, and I don’t even think I’m going to go. It would be impossible for me to get the total costs down to what I can afford, so I don’t want to get myself all excited about something that isn’t going to happen.

Mom:

I am taking it in April through my school and probably in June as well, so it will probably go up from a 30 to a 31 or 32.

Astros Jake: Although this is not a Bama thread, I will respond to your comment about being a “non-drinker”. My son is an upcoming Bama Freshman. He is a fun-loving guy, HUGE Bama fan, and loves sports. I know of plenty of other upcoming Freshmen that have similar views. As far as you qualifying for Honors classes, currently to be in the Honors Program, a 28 ACT/1250 SAT is sufficient. There are some more competitive programs within the Honors College. The required GPA is only 3.3, but as stated in a prior post, you need a 3.5(weighted) for scholarships.

AstrosJake: Sorry I meant to also mention that my son, like you, is also “non-drinker” and firmly believes you can have fun and socialize without drinking.

mombama2012:

Thanks, yeah I’m sure the fact that I don’t do anything like that won’t be a problem and won’t affect my social experience. As for Honors, that would be a good idea for me to take Honors classes, I probably will.
