is a weighted GPA of 4.57 good or just average or bad?
please reply! :)

good. but what courses did you take? and im assuming your uw is 4.0..

I think it is more important what your UW GPA is and also your course load. Every school have their unique way of computing their GPAs so it will not be possible to judge a 4.57 W GPA.

oh and don't forget classrank.. like if everybody get's a 4.57 (which i highly doubt).. it's kinda meaningless.

top 5%/ top 10%

how do i calculate UW gpa?
proud08er, in our school, i am #2 / 439 kids so i think our schools have diff. ways to calculate weighted GPA...lol

Strip all +/- of the grades then assign the value to the grades as follows:

A - 4
B - 3
C - 2
D - 1
F - 0

i.e. A+, A, A- all become A and gets 4. So if you took 6 Academic courses and got A+ on 5 and B+ on 1, you compute
5*4+3 = 23/6 = 3.83

Divide the sum total of all Academic course grade by the number of Academic courses to get your UW GPA.

It depends on the school, I think Stanford might just take the GPA from the high school transcript. They are looking for the top 10% not just UW GPA.

TooRichForAid: What happen if the school doesn't rank? Do they take the top 10% of all those who applied from a particular school.

If you read some college admission books, there are many ways colleges can get that information. I think when they don't have any information from your school, some schools hide this information, they probably revert back to UW GPA, which the system technician computes. I think you should get these books from the library and read them, I think that is the best way. I'm rereading several books to get a better understanding of college admission to non-state top schools.

So, even though MY average is only 96, do I count it as a 4.0 since I have no Bs??
They just give us averages and ranks. I'm 11/361. This is so annoying, because I can never give an actual GPA.

I'm not sure; my D's school only gives one school GPA which is weighted and based on +/- and the school profile list the average GPA of the outgoing class which hovers around 3.75 - 3.8 with the top GPA around 4.5 - 4.6 (which is not listed)

so, your saying that if the school DOES rank, then class rank is looked at, not the gpa?

No they look at both, but the rank gives them an idea where your GPA is compared to another candidate's GPA from your school.

But that is why the school doesn't rank because the GPA doesn't convey where the student is wrt to others at the school. So there is something missing here. If the GPA can convey where the students stands then only the school will rank the students.

See at D's school the Hons. and AP courses are weighted the same but the curriculumn of AP exceeds well beyond the Hons. course. So how can the GPA of the two students one having APs and another only Hons. can be put together to rank.

Same with my D high school. But nothing is an exact science especially when you compare numbers like GPA, I think the next step is they look at the courseload. Obviously APs looks harder than non-AP, but there are a lot of buts, and that's why the job of an adcom is difficult. I think they do know some of these schools very well, from what I read, they gather these information and put in their files when they travel, about the course, the particular teacher, etc..

according to the formula thing you gave me, my unweighted gpa is 3.77, so rounded it'd be 3.8
is that good?

hehe my school doesnt weight at all. Even for senior awards (based on gpa).
so my colleg + AP classes hurt me.

nikkigirl12 : As far as my knowledge go, you don't round 3.77 to 3.8. The rule of thumb is that you should have an UW GPA above 3.8 for a shot at top schools irrespective of the course load.

i really am not applying to like HYPS or ivies. the most "up-there" school im probably applying to is NYU and maybe CMU

otherwise, my main focus is on Pitt

In that case 3.77 UW GPA is a very strong and you should not worry.
