Weighted or Un-Weighted?

There was another thread about the same topic, no answers there, however this is the question:

Most highschools rank students through a weighted system. Do colleges do the same? What do they consider? Weighted or Un-Weighted? If Weighted, then what is the big deal about the unweighted grade?

I myself feel that when I graduate I will have a 3.5 unweighted GPA, however if it was weighted I would have over 4 out of 5. Obviously my weighted GPA looks better, as do msot people's whom take hard courses and get a good grade on them.

So what do most colleges look at? Especially Ivies?

your course load is considered, hence your weighted gpa is considered.

but in a system where almost all kids have hard courseloads & weighted gpa's vary greatly by school, the unweighted gpa is consistent.

However, the 1st thing the colleges look at your courseload. If you didn't take hard classes, your 4.0 UW may look weak compared to someone (such as yourself) who took very hard classes w/ a 3.5 UW.

what's the difference btwn weighted and unweighted?
