Weighted or Unweighted?

I am taking rigorous classes, so yeah, my unweighted GPA is very pathetic.
In my junior/senior year, in many of my AP and Honors classes, I had A-s which means 3.67. If I weighted them, however, it didn't matter. They were all over 4.0 anyways.
So, does Rice look at weighted or unweighted GPA??
If they only look at unweighted, I am screwed and it's VERY unfair.
At my school, honors and APs are way harder than regulars, or APs way harder than Honors.

Also, does Rice recaculate GPA? I really hope not. For instance, would Rice look at my GPA that includes Art, Photography, Bible or just core classes such as science, math etc? I got good grades in my Art and photography classes, which makes my GPA 3.9 overall (still fine).

It doesn't make sense... if Rice or any school only looks at unweighted GPA, all the kids at my school who take hard classes would hardly reach 4.0 whereas those kids in Regulars might easily get it. Of course, they look at what classes we take, still a low GPA is a huge blow. Also, if any kids at my school gets 4.0 unweighted GPA, it'd be 4.5~4.6 weighted - which is just IMPOSSIBLE, at least at my school.

Please help me out!

3.67 != pathetic.

Just btw.

Also, Rice understands courseload rigor. That is what your Guidance Counselor can explain for you. They have a form that contains information that Rice would use to accurately level the playing field.

Different schools weigh different ways. As a result, the UW GPA is used. But if you take all AP and Honors and get a 3.67, you have a better shot of getting in compared to someone who took basic courses and got a 3.9

I’m in the same predicament. Our valedictorian will most likely be a person who took way less AP classes than the rest of us and just did well in honors. My UW GPA is also 3.67 but I’m still in the top 5%. so hopefully they look into class ranks as well.

my school doesn’t even rank…btw it kinda sucks that the one who took easier classes has a chance to look like the smartest kid.

oh well, 3.67 is unweighted GPA of my core subjects(without Art, Bible, Tech etc) in my junior and prob senior year.

If rice doesn’t recalculate GPA of the core subjects, I can still get 3.9(an official UW of mine on the transcript.)

Anybody knows Rice recalcuate GPA just to include the core subjects??? I really really really wish it doesnt! I am so worried now ughhhh.

Okay, I just called Rice.
THEY DON’T RECALCULATE!!!

huangshirley - they do look at class rank. Don’t worry.

Also, stop worrying. Rice does not blindly admit people with high GPA’s who took easy courses.

Antarius is pulling your leg here- reacting to your characterization of your grades as pathetic… 3.67 is not pathetic. :)

!= means “does not equal” … at least in computer science.

I got into Rice with approx the same UW GPA on my transcript. To be fair, they look at your transcript, not just the number. We use +/- here too :D

anxiousmom - Owl2014 is right. I meant != as in NOT equal to

Probably should have clarified that to the non programming crowd. oops

Man - ya learn something new every day. I knew you weren’t agreeing with the OP about his grades being pathetic, I just never noticed that exclamation mark… which I also didn’t know meant “does not equal”. Well, good to know!
Good luck to all Rice applicants and here’s hoping you get the news you want in ED and RD decisions. :)

I was in a good mood and thus refrained from being snarky about how a single B means that one is doomed for life  as we seem to see on these boards often

<> also means NOT Equal in some languages.
