<p>hey guys im a hs sophomore and im kinda new around here, this may seem like a really stupid question after readin wut all ur other posts r about but id appreciate an answer.. yea so i have no idea wutsoever about weighted and unweighted gpa's. im taking 2 ap courses and im guessin that would have an impact on the weighted gpa but im still unsure. and it seems like my school's grading system is different than others.. which gpa actually goes to college, or if both, which ones more important?</p>
<p>Both weighted and unweighted are sent to colleges; oftentimes colleges will take the marks and recalculate it based on their own weighting system.</p>

<p>Basically the idea of "weighting" your GPA is to compensate for the difficulty of AP/IB/honours classes. The reasoning being that your grades in an advanced course is lower than the grade you would receive if you were in a regular class. </p>
<p>An A in a normal class might be worth 4.0, while an A in a AP class would be 'worth' more (say, 4.5)</p>
<p>sorry that i keep on asking.. so the unweighted gpa excludes the grade i got from my ap class or would it just have the A worth a 4.0</p>

<p>And whether colleges get both the weighted and unweighted GPA depends on your high school. My d's high school sent only a weighted GPA; they figured that the colleges could "unweight" it should they so choose.</p>
<p>Your school might not even weight your gpa (could be why you don't know the difference). If that's the case it doesn't matter.</p>
<p>I think you should talk to your guidance counselor about this. S/he will be able to tell you how your school weights GPAs. If a school weights grades they explain their formula when they send your transcript and school profile to colleges. This thread gives you an idea of how schools vary.

Colleges are well aware that GPA calculations vary from school to school and sometimes recalculate them with their own formulas.
