Weighted vs non-weighted GPA

This isn’t a UMTC specific question, but what exactly is the difference between weighted and non-weighted GPA? My son’s transcript lists “academic” and “all-subject” GPAs. I’m guessing weighted is academic (since that # is quite a bit higher - PE was not his strong suit!), but not entirely sure. A little late to be asking, since he’s already submitted his apps, but just curious. I feel like I’m learning a new language through this process!

A weighted GPA is a GPA that takes the difficulty of classes into account along with the grades – honors/AP classes are given more weight. So for example an A in a regular class would be a 4.0 while an A in an honors class could be a 4.4 or so. Schools calculate weighted GPA differently and some don’t do it at all.

If you google “weighted GPA” you can get more descriptions but your S should talk to his guidance counselor to see what exactly is done in your HS.
