Weighted vs Unweighted GPA

So I've been looking around at colleges lately and I'm a bit worried. My unweighted GPA right now is around a 3.7-3.8, my weighted GPA is a 4.8. I know that's not bad but do colleges look mainly at your GPA or weighted GPA. I'm asking because someone taking academic classes could have a 4.0 but someones taking all AP's could have a 3.5. So am I better off having a 3.8 GPA taking AP's or a 4.0 taking honors classes. And would a college pick me over someone who has a 4.0 in academic classes?

Unweighted…however, I think colleges have their own system of weighting. Like, I think at UCs, they discard freshman grades and double the weight of junior grades. Of course, colleges also say that a lower grade in a harder course is better, but I imagine that’s only true to a certain extent. You should be taking some APs but not stretching yourself too far.

As far as your UW gpa, it’s excellent, though at the most selective colleges, it will be on the lower end for accepted students.

I’m in the exact same position as the OP. I hope that it doesn’t hurt my chances too much. I have a low unweighted GPA ~3.7, but my weighted GPA is around 4.9 but my class rank is high.

TBH, I don’t think that’s fair. I could easily have a 4.0 throughout all four years of high school. A 3.6-7 in AP classes is definitely much more worthy than a 4.0 in academic classes where the teach you how to spell “academic”
