Is it a good thing to put weightlifting as an EC for college apps?

It is a time consuming EC that takes up 6 hours a week. It is important than to me and reflects who I am, imo.

depends how far you take it. I've taken it to the next level (holy crap) -- bodybuilding. I've competed and everything.. so, I put it down. But if I didn't compete, and just did it on my own for fun, I probably wouldn't put it down

what if you put on like 40 pounds of muscle?
completely changed your physique though not necessarily as far as bodybuilding perse?

I might not put it as an EC, but if it's changed your life it might make for an interesting essay.

thanx i think i may just do that

still looks more impressive if you put on 40lb's and then competed ;)

Just train hard and try for a contest! :D

EDIT: of course, that depends on how much time you have left until college apps. If it's next year, it'd be hard to compete before that time; but, it depends on your conditioning now. Anyway, I first took up weightlifting to lose weight (which I did, obviously) and then the next step, logically, was to step on stage.

I've been doing it since grade 9 thou.. :P

Of course it's an extracurricular activity. Just because it isn't a club doesn't mean you're not spending time and energy on it outside of class to better yourself...and that is an EC.

:) By that logic, could I put CC as an EC?

Kidding, but still. By that logic, it kind of fits.

How does a semi-anonymous internet forum about the college admissions game better you?

Absolutely put it down. I think that it stinks that the common app seems to have space only for varsity. My child does yoga and strength trains. These are valid choices for exercise that consume time and show that you are athletic.

Common app I believe has "other" as a choice. Many people are involved in martial arts, yoga, weight training, etc.., things that you will not get in school. Some poor school districts have little sports and so "varsity" is not an option for outside sports. You don't have to be a superstar in many cases, just be well-rounded.

It's not an EC, it is an athletic activity, I think that is a separate section (been awhile since she filled it out).

If you just do it in your spare time on your own, then no. Would you put down video games, or babysitting your siblings, or washing the dishes? Definitely not. That would be ludicrous; people will try to get away with putting down anything and everything as an "EC", when most things are not.

On the other hand, it is obviously a great personal achievement that could make for a great essay.

Sure why not put it down? Especially if you used it to further better yourself in another sport since that shows further dedication in your other EC's. My school has a weight room, it's open pretty much every day after school, so I think it's a pretty legit activity.

Lifting a couple dum bells in your basement probaly wouldn't be though, but you don't add 40 pounds doing that :D.

I agree with the essay idea but not so much listing it as an ec. I meen, if someone likes to read or likes to ride his bike a lot, that wouldn't really fit as an ec. I think it would have to be something a little more structured, like a club or something. Maybe you can start a club. But if not, I'd go with the essay.

ivies are looking for well rounded students. it would help a lot to put it down. the goal is to have ridiculous numbers but at the same time look like a cool kid.

DS is on the football team. He wrote football as an EC, but also added that he does year-round weight training and weight lifting. It's a commitment of time and energy that he takes seriously.

It's not really an EC, but rather a hobby. Still, I think it's fine to mention it in an appropriate place. Unlike videogames, it will be viewed positively by most adults who read your application, and may add some interest if it contracts with other, more academic elements.

I put tennis down as an EC, don't know why you shouldn't put Weightlifting.
