Hi! Being a sophomore, I decided to start early in the college search. I really want to go into medicine and so I stumbled upon Cornell medical school in Qatar, that has a 6 year med program. I tried searching for stats on admitted students to this program, but literally found nothing on their website. Does anyone have any information about admissions or almost anything to do with this program?
It’s part of Cornell university full accredited by US plus residency is in the US… now a large chunk of the class is for Qataris… it’s part of a few elite US schools with an amazing campus in Doha… checked it out a few years ago… check Qatar foundation… it’s two years undergrad and four medical school
NGL, I don’t know anything about this program whatsoever but just looking at the residency matches, it looks like a very poor match list- on par with Carib schools
“Anyone who graduates from a medical school whose location is outside of the geographic boundaries of the United States or Canada is considered an International Medical Graduate (IMG). Cornell is the first American university to step outside of these geographic limits by establishing a medical program and by awarding its MD degree. Thus WCM-Q students will be the only IMGs with US medical degrees.” https://qatar-weill.cornell.edu/admissions/medical-program/four-year-medical-curriculum/frequently-asked-questions
Graduates of the Qatar program are considered to be “international” medical graduates.
Thank you everyone for the replies! However, to people who know this institution and the six year program, would you please be able to provide information regarding admissions, if you know about it?
But thank you to everyone who gave information. It is really appreciated!
@avmlgeek36 my son is working on an accplication to Cornell in Qatar you need to apply via their webpage and at first you need access to the portal. I would recommend calling them or emailing them.
Graduates of Cornell Qatar are considered IMGs and must apply to residency through the ECFMG.
Although some Qatar grads match in the US, most do not.
BTW, only about 40% of US-IMGs match, and those that do match in the US tend to match into less competitive specialties. IMGs need higher Step score to match at the same program in the same specialty than do US MD or DO grads.
Accredited does not mean what you think it means. Accredited only means its medical curriculum meets the minimum standards required by the ECFMG for programs that graduate students who want to apply to the US residency match. There are several hundred foreign medical schools that meet this criteria.
IMGs (including grads of Duke-Singapore and Cornell Weill Qatar) must apply thru the ECFMG, have their credentials recognized & approved, take Steps 1, 2 ck, 2cs and pass them all before they can apply for residency. NOTE-- you will need to fly to the US in order to take the Step 2 CS.
The ERAS system for residency applications allows PDs to filter out all IMG applicants with a click of single button. Don’t expect the Cornell or Duke brand to help you get past the filter.
Yeah, I definitely agree. I apologize, if I failed to mention that I want to practice medicine in the Middle East in the long term, though. @iwannabe_Brown @WayOutWestMom
But thanks! Yeah I understand that.
@avmlgeek36 oh, that definitely changes things. I don’t know anything about that but it wouldn’t surprise me if WCM-Qatar had a great reputation and a great success rate for training physicians in the Middle East.
