I really want an international aspect to my degree because I want to work in an international relations field, but im not sure yet if its political science or french language and culture or what. I was accepted to Macalester which is known for its expertise in Internationalism. So I'm wondering would I still fair at Northwestern even if their International Affairs program is not as developed?

keenya2006, NU offers many ways to pursue an international focus. In addition, you should also know it's a great place for students who haven't made up their minds and still need to explore. They make it easy to change majors, double major, major across schools, and blend interests by designing a major. They expect students to explore and change their minds.

Hi Keenya2006. It's funny because I have the exact same question as you. I got into Tufts which has great IR but really want to go to NU. I want to study something to do with international studies. (I learn French too!) I've read about creating ad hoc majors or something so you can pretty much design what you want. Or there are international/cultural paths within political science I think. Have you decided between NU and Macalester? Maybe let me know what you're thinking or if you find out anything new. If you do go to NU, maybe I'll see you around!

Hey Katie! Wow it's a small world. Yeah, that was the only thing that was making me think twice about NU because no matter what path I take, I know it will involve international affairs, and I just want to make sure that is stressed in my education. We can create our own alliance francais a Northwestern haha. I think I am going to Northwestern, it is an amazing institution and I just feel proud for getting in. Also, I like how we can blend with the other colleges.

haha yeah it is. so you're in Wisconsin? Haha and this is probably a reeeeally stupid question but were you like born in kenya or is that your name or...I'm sorry!! What else are you interested in? haha i've always thought it would be funny to know someone and say years later 'i met them on college confidential'....wouldn't of happened 10 years ago that's for sure!!

Yes, I live in good ol' Milwaukee, Wisconsin-Home of Beer and brat wurst haha lol. My name is Keenya, and since my mom is black I guess you could link me to Africa some how lol haha But my dad is the one that gave me my name and he is totally white...so I still don't know why he chose it haha anyway lol, yes that would be interesting having a big CC gathering at Northwestern lol. Well, I enjoy long walks on the beach...haha lol our beaches are too dirty for that. I love traveling and reading and going to concerts and completely rockin out...what about you? Have you decided where you want to go. Eugh lol It's only been an hour lol. Well take your time with your decision. We should chat some more.

haha guess what! I'm going to be a political science (maybe psychology) major with international affairs as well...and I'm currently learning french. I didn't apply to Tufts, but I was going to pick Northwestern over Brown if i was accepted to Brown because I want to go to law school and so I can pretty much design whatever double major I want and be okay.

the poli sci dept is awesome, but personally i'm not thrilled with the int'l studies program (i already declared both).

Eugh...gosh I want this decision to be easy. But I mean...Northwestern....I really want to go there. I mean is there int'l studies department decent at least...because I could always expand somewhere else in grad school. Maybe I should just visit both schools then come to a conclusion. I visit both during spring break.

well, check out the int'l studies website and the course requirements, it'll give you an idea of what the program is like. I know the head of the department, he's a really good guy, and I'm sure the professors are great, I just wasn't thrilled with the structure of the requirements.

oh, and don't let something like your major keep you from going to a better school ... undergrad majors, unless you're engineering or science or maybe econ, don't really matter all that much. Everyone is doing int'l relations these days, anyway.

I am thinking of Poli Sci/Econ/IR

I need to figure out what works best for me: NU, Tufts or UVA

Oh this dilemma

Hey everybody. i'm deciding between tufts and NU too. has nebody heard more about the IR dppt? I know it's a really popular major at tufts. Oh and is anyone going to Preview NU day?

Hven't heard much more about the international affairs dept. but I looked at the courss and suh and they seemed pretty decent..close to what I would have gotten at Mcalester and I love NU's study abraod options...direct enrollment in universities like Oxford and London School of ecoonomics or the Political Science University in Paris :) and alot of people seem to be double majoring with international affairs.
