Ok, so yesterday I got in the mail a letter from a local State University. It was not from the admissions but instead was from the "Residence life".

It says " Congratulations on your acceptance into the University."

Then it says, "although your admission to XXXXXX has been approved, a specific on campus living space has not been secured for you...

That is all it says about my getting into the school.
Then it has other sheets regarding which dorm I want and meal plans.

It barely even touches on the school aspect really, and seems a little strange for an acceptance letter. Although this is my first so what do I know.

So, do you guys think this is the acceptance letter or this was supposed to be the follow up and got to my house first?

Could this be a mistake then, the acceptance. It is my safety school but still I remember stuff like this happening last year. Other people who applied in November still haven't gotten anything back from the same school.

I think you have been admitted as it is not unusal for a large state U system for the res. life letter to come before the actual admissions (this has happened to a few of my students recently the letter from the office of admission shortly followed).

Res life is responsible for getting headcounts (remember these admissions happen on a rolling basis) and having people secure space. Most likely admission sent a list over to res life of students who have reqested to live on campus and all res life is doing is letting you know about the space availablity situation.

Congratulations!! It is good to know that no matter what happens with the rest of your applications that you will have someplace to go.
