I have obviously heard of Wesleyan's reputaiton as being weird and artsy and out-there. However, I didnt get that sense either time that i was on campus. I can't decide if i should go here for the biological sciences. Any help? What social life like?

I'm sure you'll get some good answers here, but while you're waiting, you should go to the Wesleyan forum and read dozens of responses to questions asked by students considering Wesleyan over the last few years.

Wesleyan is an AWESOME place to go for sciences :o)

social life: www.wesleying.net

i'm a neuro major, i am too tired to elaborate, maybe mad will in the morning?

sure xue, though i'm not sure quite what you wanted me to be getting at.

Wesleying is a student-run blog that posts a lot of events that are going on all over campus - so check it out to get an idea about the type of stuff that's going on. (Note, of course, that only dry events will be posted).

In terms of social life in general - I guess it's hard to describe. Everyone finds their niche. On a typical weekend night, you can find a Second Stage student-run theatre production, some kind of dance performance, some sort of musical performance (including acapella), acapella and improv and all that good stuff going on in the early evening (8-10 pm). Later, there will usually be at least one big dance party going on, and plenty of smaller unofficial parties at senior houses and other venues. On weekend nights and many weekday nights, bands from the outside world and from the Wesleyan world will be playing in either the WestCo Cafe or at Eclectic.

I would say that wesleyan really is pretty weird and out there... but more so when the weather is nice than otherwise. Really, sometimes I think the whole campus has SAD.

Science at Wesleyan is awesome because you have relatively small classes (once you get past the intro's, which are big everywhere, and there's no reason why they shouldn't be, really - but the professors are STILL very accessible even in those). You also have extremely easy access to research - it's relatively easy to get a Hughes grant and stay and do research over the summer, or to work in a lab during the year. This is especially true because it's a university, and so there are graduate level resources, but relatively few graduate students. There's some ridiculously high rate for percentage of papers published in journals by Wes professors that have been co-authored by an undergrad.

Come to wes!! :D

The education is indeed first-rate, and if you are attracted to the unique kind of environment that can only exist at a school which drums its fraternities out of existence because they are "gender-exclusive", while at the same time giving maximum support to an endless array of ethnic and gender theme dorms, you will love Wesleyan.

If when you visited campus, you didn't think Wesleyan was particularly weird, then I'd go with your gut feeling. It's really not THAT weird.
And as people have said, sciences are really great.

Social life is really amazing. There are so many different things to do all the time. I'll dig up a post I wrote on this topic before and post it here in a second.

Also look here for what was said before about social life at Wesleyan:

I'm a freshman and I want to major in Neuroscience or Molecular biology and science in society, and I'm already working in a lab. I have a ridiculous relationship with my advisor where she knows exactly what I've been up to academically and she's there for help at any time.

One of my friends was having a hard time during the start of the semester, and the two of them went for a walk and discussed her options. My advisor also handed one of my friends tickets to a dance show when her mom was visiting.

My intro bio professor tries to learn the name of all 100+ students in the intro class. The sciences here are awesome. I'm being challenged more than I ever thought I could, and I'm loving every second of it. The science community here is pretty tight knit as there are a bunch of different organizations and you're probably going to spend a good amount of time working with other science majors in and out of classes.

I came here because of the sciences, they kinda rock!
