Weird but good SAT score, advice?

650W
800 R
800 M

Wow... now I am usually the one who criticizes people for having superb scores and be depressed about them ("boo-hoo, I only got a 2260"). Yet, I really don't know what to do. If this was a 750,750,750, I would probably retake it, but I don't know if I should. On one hand, 1600/1600 is really good. I am very happy with that. And everyone I know says that Writing really does not matter as much as the other two. So in a sense, I have a perfect score. On the other hand, even silverturtle him/herself has said that just good studying and practice can give a 750+ for anyone (i took this test nonchalantly, with very little study)

But to lose all your points on one section is VERY peculiar and this is starting to make me second guess whether I should retake it just to get a better superscore. However, if I do retake it, I really have nowhere to go but down on reading and mathematics. Any advice on what to do?

Leave it alone. So many schools don’t even look at the writing…and as you said, you can only go down in the other areas which might lead someone to think it was just a fluke. Congrats on the great score!

If you have time and money, and if you’re really concerned, I think you should give it a shot. You could always cancel it if you’re not too confident about the outcome.

I am just wondering if this score is good enough for the top colleges.

Go ahead and retake it, but do so only after enough practice that you’re confident you’ll get 720+ on the writing.

I would retake. You don’t want to come off as weak in any area for ultra competitive schools. If you took this test nonchalantly, then imagine what some practice can do. I would aim for 2300+ for top schools. You can easily raise the writing score by just learning grammar rules - you don’t even need a 11 or 12 essay to raise to more than a 650.

If you wish to bump up that writing score, I would recommend Barron’s writing workbook, along with academichacker’s thread on essay writing.

Should I take tha ACT writing, focus on that, and then based on that score, retake the SAT?

No, just study the SAT writing section and retake the SAT.

This thread (http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-preparation/645763-how-write-12-essay-just-10-days.html</a>) is invaluable if you want to get a good essay score. Also, I’m assuming you’re missing quite a few grammar questions. Silverturtle has an extensive grammar section in his thread, he covers just about everything there is to know on SAT grammar… The biggest thing, though, is to practice a lot of W questions from collegeboard. You can request old PSAT tests, and of course, the Blue Book has 10 practice tests… Focus on the writing sections, but don’t neglect M or CR, either! And the SAT question of the day is always helpful. After you practice, focus on WHY you’re making grammatical mistakes, and LEARN from them!

There should be no reason you don’t get at least 2300 if you retake.
