Weird EFC correction that's making me nervous

I was all psyched that I was all set with the college process when i got a fafsa email last night. I was informed that one of the schools on the list on my 'corrected' fafsa had corrected my fafsa and upped my efc. What's weird is that it says the financial aid advisor of said school had corrected it. why would a school correct it?
I've enrolled at Umass amherst and the school that corrected it is not umass. I have not received any such thing from umass. does this correction apply to the college that I've enrolled in even though the correction was made by a school that i haven't enrolled in? umass has already given me a certain amount of aid and should I be worried that it'll be affected by this correction? I have no idea what's going on, so I'd like to understand.
thanks!

The financial aid counselors at the colleges have the capacity to change mistakes on he FAFSA. It is spooky. I don’t agree that they should be allowed to do that unless they send the correction to the student so s/he knows what is corrected.

Find out what the correction is and the reason. It could affect your financial aid, particulalrly if UMass met your need 100% as there are certain types of aid that you are not allowed to get if you don’t have the need to justify it.

This happened to us last year - out of 14 schools S was accepted to, only one corrected his FAFSA like you’re describing. I called around and asked questions but didn’t dig far enough to find out why. The school making the correction (Northeastern) gave such ridiculously low aid anyway, it was never in consideration for S to attend. We ended up pretty much ignoring it. It never affected the school he did attend.

Pinotnoir, that it didn’t affect your S’s does not mean the same might will go for the OP. If one’s EFC is $10K and the cost of the school is $20K and the school gives a full $10K in aid, if that EFC is upped to $12k, the award is likely to be reduced. If the award is only $5K, it is likely the school will ignore it. It will take a while for UMass to get to this change and address it. If it does not go up beyond the limits, the award is likely to remain the same, but if the change puts the award over, there is likely to be a reduction to make it in line with the need.

True. Just supplying some anecdotal info.

Are you sure UMass will see this change that another school made? OP should call FAFSA to find out.

Well, My efc was 0 and umass gave me really decent aid, inclusive of a pell grant more than 4400. but this college upped my efc to 1150 and said i’m eligible only for pell grants of 4400. i don’t think umass can see this information but i have no idea what to do. the college that corrected this is not umass, i’m 100% sure.

This happened to us, with a school my D was not accepted to. When I went back in to see our SAR, it did not reflect the changes this other school had made. The changes only show up for that one school. If you look on the fafsa, is only the school that made the change listed? That is what showed on the SAR for the school that made the change. I know there were directions on how to get back to your original, unchanged FAFSA, and that is what we did. Sure enough, all the other schools my D applied to were listed, and the original EFC was back. In our case though, the school that made the change actually came up with a lower EFC, by several hundred dollars, so I wish that was the one every school had been able to see! Do a little hunting at the FAFSA site, and I think you will see what I mean.

I looked through that and it didn’t make too much sense. the email said that one of the schools on my corrected fafsa had changed it and only the ones on the corrected had received the changes. i was rejected by one of those and i chose not to go to the other two. in the SAR, there was no mention of any schools, except at the end. at the end, there was a list of schools and their graduation and retention rates. it’s quite obvious that these were the schools involved because there was absolutely no mention of the other 10 schools that i had applied to. We’re going to call the fafsa people now and ask them if this affects umass, cause it was on a different list and my efc was 0 for that.
