Weird email from Northeastern?

I just got an email that’s subjected “Is Northeastern still on your list? Please let us know!”

It went to talk about if I was still interested in Northeastern and that if I weren’t, I could withdraw, and if I were then I wouldn’t need to do anything.

Has anyone got this email as well? It feels like Northeastern already wants to reject me lol

Were you deferred or did you apply RD?

I got the same email today. I don’t know why but I feel like they want me to are trying to hint that I won’t get accepted so withdraw or something like that… Applied RD by the way.

Apparently there was an option on the admissions website where you were to indicate if you wanted to be placed in the RD pool. Several people posted about that when EA and ED decisions came out. Did you do that?

Got the same email… Weird. Applied RD

Same here
I wrote back and told them about how it is one of my top choices and I’d be honoured to attend (should I be accepted) etc
Rd applicant

That is weird. I can’t imagine that the goal is to get people to withdraw - there’s no benefit to them in that. (After all, the more people they deny, the more it boosts their rankings, right?) My sense is that they must send these to people who are in the gray area, because they want to “sort” those applicants based on a “test” of demonstrated interest. If you respond right away with an “Oh my goodness yes - Northeastern is my top choice - I already redecorated my room in husky wallpaper!” type answer, then you flag yourself as someone who’s seriously interested. If you shrug and think “That was weird” but leave it alone… my prediction is you get denied in favor of the husky wallpaper kid. I could be totally wrong, but that’s my best guess as to how to interpret this. If you really care about getting into NU, I think it would be important to respond promptly and with enthusiasm. JMHO. Good luck!!

Count me in as very confused. Especially “if I were then I wouldn’t need to do anything” part. The only plausible thing sounds like it is trying to get people to withdraw if they aren’t interested, but this is absolutely terrible psychologically for an already confusing college process. My advice would be to ignore this email. This is so confusing I genuinely want to talk to someone about it and tell them to stop doing this.

My son received the same email (RD). I assumed that they were trying to encourage students who prefer and/or are committed to their early action schools to withdraw to improve yield. But I really have no idea.

You’re probably right, @cafe9999 . There was also a person in another thread who got one and said they’d never logged into the portal (lost the login info) and wondered if that was why. But regardless of the underlying reason, which may be perfectly constructive, I agree with @PengsPhils that Admissions should rethink they way they did this. If they really want to make this kind of an inquiry, a little thoughtful effort could avoid approaching it in such a confusing and unsettling way. There’s no need to come off like somebody’s ambivalent, passive-aggressive boyfriend. It’s just going to alienate people who really were still interested!

Yeah the email says “If you have enrolled in another school or determined that Northeastern isn’t the right fit for you…” I think it’s just to remind people that already know they won’t be attending that they have the option to withdraw.

I was also a little surprised by the email… I applied RD and received the same one yesterday. Perhaps they’re trying to work on 1. their yield, but 2. their scholarship distribution. Why end up giving scholarships to a student who is already committed to another school.

Even if I were 100% uninterested in NEU, I wouldn’t withdraw my application unless I would receive a refund on my application fee. Does anyone know if this is the case?

I got this email too (applied RD) and I’ve logged into my portal many times before. I’ve never seen any college do this before so I was very surprised when I read it. Now I feel like I will definitely get rejected :frowning:

Regular Decision… it’s pretty spooky @whitespace

@a20171 then they shouldn’t send this email to RD applicants and confuse everyone

@airfire1928 @cantdisclosename and others, this seems to be a really bad decision by admissions that doesn’t seem to have anything to do with your chances of acceptance. Don’t fret.

I agree with @PengsPhils—don’t worry about the email; it likely means nothing. Maybe they are counting on some students who would feel more inclined to withdraw if they already knew for certain that they were going somewhere else based on choice or finances (esp. if they think it might help a classmate where the school is a first choice) and if they were asked the question about their interest. Can’t think of any reason to ask a student to withdraw if the plan was to reject that student. My son did receive two emails from Northeastern today—first to say “thank you for your interest” and “your application will remain active…” and then “we are currently reviewing applications…and would like to confirm your intended major”. Did anyone receive those emails? He did send a note yesterday confirming his interest.

Is it necessary to respond to the email?

@Jpgranier My son replied because NU is his top choice and he couldn’t visit so it was a way to confirm interest when in doubt about the intent. The reply letter was perfunctory, “Hello,” not personalized. The initial email stated it was not necessary to reply if you were interested, so it should be acceptable (maybe preferred) to comply with what they stated. I am new to the college process though so I hope someone else can give you more seasoned advice. My son’s response was to do what felt right for him.

I replied to it too
