Weird email from Northeastern?

My instinct is that it’s a way to gauge interest for yield purposes, but personally I feel like it’s kind of a mean thing to do. It throws a lot of people into unnecessary uncertainty.

The other question is: are there people who applied RD who didn’t get this email? Or was it sent to all RD applicants?

That does seem like a strange e-mail. Best to contact the school and ask about it,

I also got the email from NU on 1/26/17 but I just replied to the email on 2/5/17. Do you guys think that Northeastern will think I am not (that) interested in the school?

@aquapt, unless they’ve when caged this in the last year or two, when they do the stats, they count all applications received (complete or not) as an application, so an applicant who voluntarily pulls a submitted application doesn’t mess with the numbers. It could help with yield, but I believe most schools care more about enrollment management than having a competitive yield.

I would not be surprised at all if they were doing this to improve their yield numbers. Improving the school’s ranking is a big part of the current business model. And yes, it is a business.

My D was deferred to RD from the EA pool and hasn’t received anything at all from them since the deferral. What does this mean? Aren’t all RD applicants supposed to be looked at together? It seems so stupid! More anxiety now!

@redpoodles What do you mean?? Most people didn’t receive anything with the exception of this one email I don’t think that means she’s not being looked at with RD applications

I’m wondering why my D didn’t receive the email when it appears everyone else in the RD pool did? She’s a good applicant–maybe not a top applicant, but certainly a decent one (3.9/4.4/32)

Did anyone deferred from the EA pool receive anything?

@redpoodles I doubt if a dozen or so students who posted here on CC about the email can be extrapolated to “everyone” getting the email.

I hope you’re right @TomSrOfBoston! It just seems like no one else is saying they didn’t get it.

My son was deferred EA and did not receive the weird email.
After being deferred his interest level has significantly dropped. I liked the school a lot, but not really liking the school trying to play around with admissions statistics though. Seems kind of tacky.

I received the email a while ago, responded the same day, and I was accepted today!! Guess it isn’t a bad sign!

I also got the email and was accepted today, but I hadn’t responded to it. I don’t think it’s a cause for concern.

A friend of mine who goes to Northeastern told me that it simply means they’ve gotten too many applications, and the school is getting cramped. This way, they can try to weed out people who applied just for the heck of it.

I replied the other day saying my son did not get the email, and just now got the weird email. He replied back, so I guess we’ll see what happens.

Congrats everyone that is hearing back today. that is exciting news and I hope everyone gets a positive reply.

To the people that got the weird email and were accepted, how did you find out you were accepted?

Also, the letter my son received was personally addressed to him, saying warm winter greetings.

it said we know we know you replied to us after getting deferred EA to RD and we are just checking to see if Northeastern is still of interest, blah blah blah, and you can submit new info still or update profile etc.

I just got the weird email about 10 minutes ago, only a few minutes after my Tufts rejection!

@avatarneil bummer about Tufts, maybe NEU note is a good sign? Good luck !!

Both my Ds (twins) just got the same email…obviously a computer generated email list, as they were both in contact with their admissions counselor this week…he knows they are still interested!
When they first saw the email…they got so nervous…thought is was a decision.
