I was just wondering if being somewhat Internet famous (perhaps 5,000 Youtube subscribers, or creating a semi-popular iPod app, or something along those lines) would be a good hook?

no
10charac

That is not a hook. It is an interesting EC. But would not be considered a hook.

Pushing it to be a super-popular iPod app that someone admissions would know would be something. Good Biz and Computer science hooks.

Ok, so the ipod app might work. How about the Youtube hook (~5000 subscribers)? I’m just wondering because I want to have a somewhat unique hook.

A “hook” is something that they really want (athlete, URM, etc.). Or a particularly famous/nationally recognized EC. I don’t really see this as being in the category. I also think that it is very difficult to create a YouTube video that is going to get a lot of hits or a successful app. The IPod app has the added issue of copyright issues that hit almost everyone who tries to create an app these days.

And the people who make the successful youtube videos are rarely those who set out to do it. If you’re making things for the simple sake of college apps, colleges will be able to recognize it. If you are doing it because you have an interest in technology or the content of the video, it should also come across in other things in your app.

Would being somewhat famous on Youtube or creating some semi-popular app help me in some way, though? Even if it isn’t a strong hook.

It would help… probably? It’s not a “hook” though, you’re misunderstanding the definition.

Does a hook necessarily need to be something athletic or academic? Because I would imagine that designing a popular app would show that you might have good business skills or something.

hooks are things you’re born with. like if you’re a minority, or a legacy, or the first in your family to go to college. or, they fill an institutional need. each college needs kids to play in its band, or on its sports teams, so those kids get a special boost. the things you’re talking about are just activities. don’t worry, you don’t have to be “hooked” to get into top schools. :)

Being a celebrity is a hook, because many colleges and universities want to enroll celebrities. So when Malia Obama is ready to go to college, she’ll have a hook.

But “somewhat Internet famous” and “semi-popular iPod app” fall short of the mark.

@Unicameral: I’m going to be the first in my family to go to college, so I guess that might help a little bit. Would being poor (~$15,000 for a 4 person family) help? Also, would being the first generation of my family born in America help (my parents were both born in different countries)?

Yes yes and yes. But overall it will come down to your transcript and test scores. Good luck.

@Unicameral: Thanks :)
