Weird Internship Phone Call

So I received a very strange phone call earlier from a company I had applied for an internship at. This is a rough explanation of the phone call:

Company Rep: Hi this is so and so from blahblahblah company are you still looking for an internship?
Me: Yes! If you have anything still open I'd love to hear more about it!
Rep: Well we don't have anything but we just wanted to hear about our applicants availabilities to tie up some loose ends.
Me: Um well I have a part time internship so I'm not looking for anything full time but I still have some time on my hands.
Rep: Okay that was the purpose of the call thank you.
Me: Bye...?

I have no idea what to make of this. Were they calling to offer me a position or just to like keep tabs on their former applicants. Maybe I'm just overanalyzying this but needless to say I'm a little confused and wondering if there was any hope of this internship (it was with a company I REALLY was interested in so if there's still any chance I want to see if I can do anything about it). Any thoughts??

that is bizarre…what industry was this?

maybe they are trying to gauge the market…

it was a technology consulting firm. that’s what i was thinking is maybe they just like to keep tabs on their applicants but it was just VERY bizarre. they didn’t even ask where i was interning just like if i was still available?

has this type of thing ever happened to anyone else? or is this just a weird call?
