I just got this invitation from UCSB in the mail today. It says “Chancellor Henry T. Yang in company with faculty, alumni, and staff of the University of California, Santa Barbara, is pleased to invite you to a UC Santa Barbara reception honoring top applicants. We look forward to recognizing your academic achievements and introducing you to the University of California, Santa Barbara.” My question is exactly why did I get this? I have heard about the Regents Scholarship but I honestly believe my stats aren’t high enough to make me a Regents Scholar. If anyone has received anything like this before, could you please tell me what is going on.
I don’t know about it in particular, but every school wants to raise its image. If you are accepted to UCSB, you will likely be accepted to other “better” schools. They would like you to fall in love with UCSB and raise their image. Regent’s may attract the tippy-top 1-2%; but how do they fill out the next 8% of the class? This is a recruitment tool to introduce you to the school and increase the likelihood of you attending and improving their overall stats.
You likely live in a population center (LA, San Diego, Bay Area), or an out-of-state city where they recruit heavily, where this is cost-effective. I just saw a full-page ad in the New England edition of the New York Times this last weekend basically advertising UCSD. Schools are competing for prestige.
Congratulations!!

If it’s your dream school, why wouldn’t you attend?
I just don’t see how I will be able to afford it without taking on a massive amount of debt.
