Weird math problem

Here's the problem:

If 4(Triangle)/6(Triangle) + 5/17 = 1, what digit does Triangle represent?

The book says its 8,here's the explanation:

If 4(Triangle)/6(Triangle) + 5/17 = 1, then 4(Triangle)/6(Triangle) = 12/17
since 12/17 + 5/17 = 1.

Since 4(Triangle)/6(Triangle) = 12/17, 4(Triangle) must be a multiple of 12.Hence, 4(Triangle) = 48, so Triangle = 8.

I tried plugging 8 into the triangles but, it doesn't equal 1.

The question is flawed. There cannot be a solution because the triangles would cancel each other out no matter what. It would always be 4/6. 4/6 = 2/3. 2/3 + 5/17 = 49/51. 49/51 =/= 1.

The triangle is a digit, not a multiplicand:

(4 tens plus 8 ones) divided by (6 tens plus 8 ones) = 12/17

that is, 48/68 = 12/17

Oops >_> that wasn’t very clear

Oh thanks, i didn’t know it was a digit either o.o, i guess i didn’t read carefully enough :/
