Weird order of Math Courses?

Hey guys. When I first got to high school, my teachers thought I was smart or something so they told me I should skip geometry and not take it, so I did. I've gotten A+s in all my math courses. But then my mom thought that it would affect my college admissions if they saw that I didn't take geometry, so she made me take it again.

So I took Alg2 and Precalc freshman year, then AP Calc BC and then geometry sophomore year. What will the colleges think about my taking geometry after calc? Is it weird?

I think they definitely will raise their eyebrows when they read your transcript. To go from AP Calc BC (a rigorous math course) to geometry may seem suspitious. They might think that you weren’t cut out for Calc or that you’re slacking off by taking the geometry course instead of pushing yourself. If you took the AP Calc BC exam and scored well, it might help…

^ No, I don’t think it’ll be that serious. As long as you had good grades in your classes and a good AP score, then you can just write a comment saying why you took geometry, and that’ll be the end of that.

This may be one of those proverbial issues for your guidance councilor to explain.

If the grades in all the math classes are consistent and you did well on the AP Calc BC test, that may well be more important than what order you took the courses.

Also—what math after Calc BC is available to you? Wil you take anything that uses the Calc BC as a pre-req in your junior and senior years of high school?

Don’t most colleges’ applications have a little space you can use to explain irregularities or provide additional information about your qualifications? The Common App does.

This is the kind of thing that little space is for.

I got a 5 on AP Calc BC, with a 5 AB subscore.
All my grades are A+s.
So I’m fine then? Thanks everyone.

Just have your counselor mention your situation in the rec (s)he writes or in the ‘additional information’ section. If anything, I would say it’s a positive thing, since you’re clearly gifted in math.

I’m sure you’re fine. At least you didn’t get a C in AP Calc with a 2 on the AP test. :)

I think there is an important rule in the application process that seems to often get lost in the CC discussions. Focus on the positive in your application. Don’t “anticipate” that the reader of your application is looking for “flaws”, and that you need to be one step ahead of the admissions committee and explain what you see as warts. That defocuses the admissions committee, and if you bring up these potential warts to your GC it defocuses him.

If I understand correctly you took geometry in your sophomore year. Most high school students take it in their sophomore year. Some students place out of taking it altogether. What resonates in math is the highest level course you’ve taken.

So … I recommend you say nothing … neither in your application nor through your GC.
