weird question about the sats :D

Hey!
I've got some colleges' deadline on the 1st of January.
I took the SAT in November and December and got a score that is lower than the college's standards but the rest of my application looks great.

Is there such thing as taking the SAT after the college's application deadline has passed and sending them the improved scores then? sort of like they are giving you another chance to meet their standards

It is not possible for you to have the December test score yet. As to whether you can submit Jan test, you need to name college because many accept Jan tests and many don’t.

You have to contact the college because some still take Jan scores.

@drusba well, i dont have the test scores yet but i know what to expect if you know what i mean, and its not high enough.
My main concern here is NYU then there’s U virginia, lehigh, rutgers

@chainiwatmj i think most of these colleges mentioned that they need the scores by their app deadlines. I can send them scores by then but promise them higher ones for the next test??? How can i put this question in a nice way in an email? lol ;p

thanks guys!

NYU, UVa, and Lehigh want all testing done by December but none actually prohibit sending Jan scores and each will actually consider Jan scores as long as they arrive on time, meaning before a decision has been made on you. To assure that will occur means that you have to name them as free sends on your application for the test so they will automatically be sent scores when released. That is actually the fastest way of delivery. In other words, you will have to send that test without knowing what the score is.

Rutgers is a different issue. Its application deadline was December 1. It actually wants testing done by November. It will accept December tests but those are too late to be considered for any merit aid because Rutgers sets December 15 as the date by which it must have your test in its hands for you to be considered for merit aid. The January test is highly unlikely to get there in time to be considered for admission. It releases decisions toward end of February and almost all will be finally made 10 days or more before they are released. January test scores won’t be released until near mid-February and that will be too late. You can send but don’t count on it being considered.

Another issue is whether you have taken SAT subject tests. For NYU and Rutgers you don’t need them. But UVa and Lehigh both strongly recommend two even though they do not require them. If you have not taken those, you may have to consider taking them in Jan rather than the SAT.

It is quite odd to send a message or an email to the admission office promising them a better SAT score on your coming test. At least, I think some eye brows will be raised.

@ttparent yes thats what i was thinking

@drusba thank you so much, how do u know all this info? wow;p

well, here’s how things are. im applying to nyu stern early decision and my application is pretty stong excpet my sat scores so i was worried the would cut me off just coz of that (talking about 1700 :/). so ur saying that if i work really hard and increase my score, they’ll really consider it? Do you suggest I send them an email or indicate somewhere in the application that I’m expecting results from another sat test?

btw notification date for EDII is Feb 15th whereas for regural its Ap 1st
next sat date is jan28 which means results wont come out till mid february???should i apply regural decision just coz of that??

I was speaking of regular decision. Last possible test date for NYU’s ED2 is December and Jan score cannot possibly get there before decision is made. They will not delay an ED2 decision to wait around for the Jan test. You would have to change ED2 app to a regular admission app to have any chance of Jan score being considered before any decision is made.

THANKS  ok! So I’ll switch it to regural decision! with that being done, and with me studying like crazy for the sat to get a higher score in january, do i know if they’ll consider the january scores for sure or am i just taking chances here? s
houldnt i email them letting them know that i have pending sat scores?

I would say that you should have more safety and matched schools for 1700 SAT score range if that is what you got or presumably will get in Dec test and before the deadline of all the applications. Be realistic and play it safe, there is always transferring next year if you really have got to get into one of the more competitive schools. You can’t based your expectation on a future score that you don’t have and may never will have by the time the schools are making decisions. Obviously, you don’t need to finalize the list until you have the Dec score in your hand.

It has some risk; if file is deemed “complete” and timely in January, meaning you have submitted everything required including “a” test score, then NYU allows you to supplement the file with new information thereafter as long as whatever you send arrives before they actually make a final decision on you. For regular decision at NYU, most decisions will go to final in March and thus you have a good chance that Jan score will be considered since it should arrive before end of February (as long as you designate NYU as a free send).

Nevertheless, before withdrawing ED2 applicaiton, you need to also consider that ED admission is usually somewhat easier than RD and that if your Dec score is in the same range as Nov, you may be assuming incorrectly that you can make a significant increase in Jan.

@ttparent yes of course i’ve got my safety and match schools in the list as well. i just didnt mention them coz im not concerned about them, but thanks ;p

@drusba thanks for all the help, much appreciated! when i know that if i dont get that sat score up its gonna prevent me from having a good chance of being admitted i know that for the rest of the 1 and a half month i have left im gonna work my butt off to get that significally higher score.
dont you think that instead of sending an ED application with a score of 1700 that has barely any chance(?) of being accepted isnt better to apply RD with a def increase score, even minimum by 100 points?
