is it possible to double major and still minor in something at tufts?
I know i probably will double major and i still want to minor in another thing. I am looking to double major in IR and math and if i could, minor in Japanese or Latin. Is that possible?

Your immediate help is needed and also appreciated.

It's possible to triple major, too. Nothing's impossible in practical limitations, but you just have to have one major and the rest is up to you I think.

I was thinking about doubling in IR and French, and then minoring in mass communications studies (I'm thinking about going into international advertising). Or maybe I'll make two of those minors. Who knows, I'll see how I like everything.

Actually for engineering, one would only be able to do 1 more minor because there are so many required courses. It would be almost impossible to double major without a bunch of AP credits or summer credits.

Plus, I'm sure every college student would want to take some courses that they are interested in, not just the required ones.

i heard a rumor that communications is going to be a major next year...

I think it's easy to major/minor as long as your courses overlap. For example, I'm doubling in IR and Econ, and a lot of the requirements are the same. Like, I have to take Intermediate Micro and International Trade for Econ, and I also have to take those courses for IR. This makes it really easy to fill requirements.

You can double major and minor in something, but just make sure your majors are somewhat related so hopefully you can double-count some courses.

bluirinka. i'm interested in IR and econ too but I'm pretty sure that overlapping courses can't count for credit for both majors, only one of them. any input anyone? i know it's like that at other schools but i guess im not sure about tufts

Are you kidding? Of course they count. Think about it...

IR requires a thematic cluster - 4 courses concentrated in one area. My thematic cluster is International Economics, with a theme of International Trade. For that I need to take Int'l Trade and Intermediate Micro.

For my Econ major, Intermediate Micro is one of the core major requirements and International Trade is a fills a necessary elective requirement.

I therefore fill 4 requirements with 2 classes.

Hmm are you sure? I'd be surprised if Northwestern was that unreasonable.

ETA: Maybe you're thinking of something else? I know that Tufts also refuses to double-count courses in cases such as distribution requirements - if a history course satisfies both the Social Sciences req and the Humanities req, they won't let it count for both.

ETA2: hee, 1500th post! Yay for me that I...have no life. Actually, let me rephrase that: I have a life, but I enjoy procrastinating and helping out my beloved Tufts :-D
