Weird situation..

So basically my scores/high school performance has put at a point where it's all or nothing (well at worst UMass). Here's how my transcript is looking:

3.74 weighted GPA (3.45 UW)
Asian
top 30%
SAT - 1960 (1310)
3 APs, 5-6 Honors
ECs - 5 years varsity soccer (captain senior year), 4 years varsity baseball (captain senior year), National Honor Society, Math Modeling. Homework Helping club, camp counselor, math tutor, UMass law intern + a few more

I know my GPA and SAT scores aren't the best especially my GPA but I know it'll be good enough to get into UMass so I consider that my safety. However I want to apply to other schools that are at least significantly better than UMass so it's worth the money. Basically pretty much all the schools on my list are reaches I think, what do you guys think?

UMass Amherst (instate) (EA)
Brandeis
Boston College (EA)
Wake Forest
Skidmore
Colgate
Colby

Also what are some other schools I should try applying for and have at least a decent chance? And will an Asian that actually has a good record in sports that aren't tennis or track stand out from other Asians/anyone?

I’m actually gonna apply to Brandeis ED… or maybe Skidmore ED? I’m visiting Skidmore soon to decide between them.

What is your weird situation? Do you have any valid excuse for the low grades and/or scores?

Nope no excuse, I meant weird situation as to how I’m pretty much all or nothing for applying to colleges. I was kind of hoping that being an Asian with a good sports record will help me out at least a little and put some leverage over other Asians. Is this true? My list right now is looking like

UMass Amherst
Brandeis (ED)
Boston College
Skidmore
Wake Forest
Bucknell
Michigan
UConn

Chances at each?

To my knowledge none of the schools on your list care enough about sports for it to be a huge deal and you are essentially implying that asians don’t do sports (which is not true). The asian thing is defiantly working against you. I don’t know a ton about the schools on your list, but I would call Brandeis, Boston College, Bucknell, Michigan and Colgate (if it ends up back on your list) reaches. Don’t know enough about the rest of the schools. Make sure you have a fairly even distribution of safeties, matches and reaches.

I know the asian thing is working against me, but I was just hoping that it wasn’t as much since I do play actual sports besides tennis. Let’s be honest, how many asians are 4 year varsity letterman in sports other than tennis or track. That being said, I know that most if not all of my schools are pretty much reaches (except UConn, UMass and maybe Wisconsin) but what are my chances of at least getting into one of them?

I personally go to a school with no sports… But I have seen plenty of asians with strong ECs focussing on sports here on CC. They are less common then other races, but they are not rare.

As for your chances, they really are rather low, they are all high reaches, your unweighted GPA is too low, your SAT is too low, your class rank is too low and your ECs do not compensate. If we look at Brandeis alone, the middle SAT range for math was 630-740, which puts you at the bottom of the range, the scores for CR and writing are similar. 94 percent of admits where in the top 25 percent of their class and over half of the admits had a 3.75+ unweighted. So really you are in a place where yes, you might get luck and get accepted, but it is extremely unlikely (I would say like a five percent chance) and I would apply to more matches and less reaches if I where you.

Again sorry I can’t speak to the stats of UConn, UMass or Wisconsin.

Well see that’s my situation. If I can’t get into any of those that I listed, I’d rather just go to UMass since it’s a lot less money (in state) and at this point I would consider it a safety. Wisconsin and UConn are the exception since they offer a particular major that I was very interested in. Does applying early decision help at all? Like early decision to Skidmore or Brandeis?

Will chance back!
