I'm a freshman and would like to join a fraternity, but I don't have the money for it. Ideally, I would like to save up and try joining a fraternity in my junior year, but is that frowned upon? Do juniors still get in, or do they primarily only pick freshman and sophomores?

There are very few Junior pledges. By your Junior year you probably won’t want to pledge anyway. The whole fraternity scene is mostly a freshmen/sophomore experience. You won’t see too many upperclassmen (with the exception of those with executive roles and the die-hards) that are very involved with the fraternity. A fair number de-activate or just aren’t really that active in the house once they hit junior/senior year. This is mostly due to “getting over” the frat party scene and the fact that most juniors+ are 21+ and prefer to go to bars/clubs as opposed to frat parties.

I would recommenced waiting at least a semester though. It will give you a better idea of what house is actually right for you. I think it’s still totally acceptable to pledge as a sophomore. Also, some houses have “scholarship” programs that will help you out with dues. Ask about them during rush.

Hope that answers your question
