So, let me start by saying I have a UC GPA of 4.098 Weighted and 3.76 unweighted.

My SAT was a 2100, 690CR, 730M, 680W.

My SAT IIs were bad (570 Physics, 680 Math2)

Extracurriculars included County Chess and Art awards, Environmental Club- Public Relations, Junior Statesmen of America- Chapter Treasurer, Partaking in a research project on the Nuclear Spent Fuel Cycle at UCI during the summer, working as a Human Resources Intern in the Summer, attending Santa Clara Engineering Seminar in the summer, about 60 hours of Community Service (I’m the blood drive coordinator, immersion trips to east LA, tutoring, food banks, etc.), Self-studied AP Psych with a 4, and am taking AP Physics C Mechanics through EPGY.

Family income of dependent parent: $147,000
Gender: Female
Ethnicity: White

I got into Harvey Mudd College- one of the top undergraduate engineering schools in the country.

How is it that I have been rejected to UCLA, wait listed at UCSD and UCD, and accepted at UCI? (I’m still waiting on UCB, but seeing the trend so far… doesn’t seem likely)

Does anyone have an idea as to why I may not have been accepted, but yet got accepted to a top college?

Thanks.

Because UCLA is higher than Harvey Mudd? Lower acceptance rate.

Also, you have 2 weighted GPAs. Cool

Sorry bout the GPA thing, fixed it…Also, I’m not as surprised about UCLA as I am UCD…

and Harvey Mudd is harder to get into than UCLA. Look at the admitted students profiles. The admitted rate seems high because the quality of applicants is better (everyone and their mom applies to UCLA… people need to do research to find a school like HMC) That’s just my outtake on it though.

Another CA parent told me of her vague theory that UCs may be roughly admitting by your location. This is what I thought the CSUs were declaring to do, but I heard nothing of the kind for the UCs. Then again, I have no clue as to how the admissions world works for engineering applicants except to hear that it can be quite competitive in CA.

I think it’s primarily because of your SAT IIs. UCD and UCSD only waitlist people who were barely within the cutoff, and they give full points for your SAT IIs. If you received 750 for both, you would have received an extra 270 points, which is enough to push you into accepted territory.

These are the UCSD and UCSD point systems. A bit outdated, since now the point cutoff is closer to 8000, but this is still relevant. Also, anyone waitlisted for UCSD is within 100 points of the cutoff. Hope this helps.

Where’d you get these from? Why is disadvantaged background and income weighted so much?

Years and years of CC, my friend, and that’s just the way it is. It’s part of the Equal Opportunity Program for those in low income and in disadvantaged backgrounds, since there’s several parts of California that have seriously terrible schools and environments.

Oh okay. Thank you.

blackrose, why worry?

you were going to attend Harvey Mudd anyway, even if you were admitted to all the UC schools.

because of financial reasons. I am 90% sure im going to hmc though.
