Weird writing question :\

Though three-fourths of Kenya is a barren plain, the highland area, where most people live, is farmed extensively.

a) the highland area, where most people live, is farmed extensively
b) stupid
c) dumb
d) stupid and dumb
e) most people live and extensively farm the highland area

I chose E. A is in passive tense which isn't recommended, so what is wrong in E that I didn't catch? (I omitted B-D for obvious reasons lol)

Parallism…

live and extensively farm

live=verb
extensively= adverb farm=verb

Oh *****…

Verb phrase and adverb phrase…thanks lol

not adverb phrase

Just adverb verb.

I don’t agree that the problem is with parallelism. There is no particular reason to exclude an occasional adverb in a list of actions. What if the clause was simply:

… most people live and farm the highland area

Or
… most people live frugally and extensively farm the highland area

I don’t think that one of these would be any better than (e).

The passive voice is not always “wrong”. Choice (e) loses the critical connection between “highland area” and “barren area”. Also it possibly is too explicit in stating that the people are the farmers.

^possible argument.

live is an intransitive verb thus the answer is (A)
