<li><p>“Sounded smoother” isn’t a grammatical principle. Redundancy, on the other hand, is, and “the two of them” and “both” are redundant. </p></li>
<li><p>You need a comma before FANBOYS when the thing after the FANBOYS is an independent clause. In this case, the clause after “but” is actually just a verb phrase–it lacks a subject.</p></li>
