Hey all, I will be attending Oberlin next fall barring a couple of waitlists admitting me, and although I'm excited to be going to such a great school, I'm a little worried I won't fit in. I am kind of a nerd who focuses on athletics, but still enjoys music a lot (trombone). I'm a little quirky as well, but I get the feeling that Oberlin is a little, too quirky for me. I mean I know all colleges have weird people, but is there a "conventional" crowd at Oberlin as well? Thanks

Almost all of the students are “conventional.” Not sure what tall tales you heard about weirdness. You shouldn’t listen to that stuff. The way you described yourself fits 90% of the students at Oberlin.

Oh, I guess I was a little narrow-sighted. That is a relief. I guess I was also judging by the people I know who go there. Last year, Oberlin enrolled four people from my school who were all, quite outlandish in a unique way. And what’s the deal with the Albino squirrels?

I had the same fears coming here, but they were quickly abated. And the albino squirrels - there are several of them that live in Tappan Square and it’s really exciting to spot them!

I visited Oberlin a couple of weeks ago and I too thought the campus would be an oasis of “weird” people. I was even worried that I would stick out too much in my painfully normal jeans and sweatshirt. I couldn’t have been more wrong. True the student body seemed more artsy and individualistic than most campuses, but for the most part they seemed like any group of college kids. I was particularly impressed, however, with the random guy in a cape and several barefooted Obies running around and climbing trees. I felt it added a unique color to the atmosphere. :D

OP, we’re pretty similar! I also play trombone haha, but other than that I’m pretty normal. I basically just do sports and school. I’m also a little worried about too much weirdness, but I did visit and there was a fair number of relatively normal people.

Actually, there’s a large number of truly normal people at Oberlin, students included - for better or worse, in fact, the overwhelming number.
Instead of “weird” think: creative, independent-minded, intellectually curious, musical, tolerant…fearless? (oops)
