I have received an email with this subject "Invitation to visit day" and below is the content. I was wondering if this is an acceptance or not.

Good luck to all of you.

Congratulations! The admission committee of the ... Department has just nominated you for admission to our PhD program and for receiving a financial aid offer. The administrative procedures of our university will slightly delay formal notification of the details of admission and the financial aid offer, but you will be receiving those shortly.

In the meantime, and on behalf of our department, I would like to invite you to attend our official visit day for prospective graduate students.

Letters like this happen because at many universities, the department manages the process, but the formal admit comes from the graduate school or some similar academic unit. I suspect that at this university, departments have been told they cannot tell applicants they've been accepted, otherwise the department would have been more direct.

I know what you mean about being a bit confused by the terminology they use. The email I received said "recommended"... I hope it means I was accepted, because I'm off to celebrate, ha.

You have been recommended for admisson by the department but the Graduate School has to approve their recommendation. Usually this is the case unless the Graduate School finds that you forged something in your application for example.
