Welch Summer Scholar Program 2017

Hi! Is anyone else applying for the Welch Summer Scholar Program this year?

Where can I finnd it?

It’s a summer program only available to Texas students. Also, the application is due tomorrow. @winterton

I applied! When do results come out?

I think April 10th or sometime in mid-April. @GeometryForLife

well results came out today…

i got rejected, rather dissapointed…

anybody else?

I was accepted to the University of Houston site. If you’re a sophomore, I strongly recommend applying again next year since I was rejected my first round too. Best of luck!

I got rejected as well, but it’s ok because when one door closes another one opens & there are still other summer programs I’ve applied to and activities I’ve planned so it’s ok :stuck_out_tongue: & just like me, I’m sure there were plenty of qualified students who they couldn’t extend an acceptance to, but it doesn’t make us any less of awesome and driven applicants who are headed for future success! & congrats to any accepted Welch Scholars!!!

@kyang0309 I am a sophomore so thanks for the advice! Do you mind posting your stats?

Unfortunately, being 15 years old as a sophomore, there aren’t many research places that accept anyone under 16, so Welch was really my only option, so I won’t have research to do this summer

Mine:

GPA: 4.0

Class Rank 2/995

PSAT: 1430 out of 1520, 670 reading/writing, 760 math

Awards: AIME Qualifier, 4th Place Texas Science Bowl, Scholastic Art Gold Key Award, and more local art and science awards, a few Science Olympiad Medals

EC’s/Leadership: Science Olympiad Captain, Mu Alpha Theta Public Relations Officer, Science Bowl Captain, National Art Honor Society Member

Community Service: Some volunteering at my local cancer center

Strong recommendations from AP Biology and Chemistry teachers

Decent? Essay about the struggles of being creative and how winning Scholastic helped me overcome this problem and promote self-development.

I thought my application was strong, but apparently not… maybe my essay wasn’t good enough or too off-topic? I thought my essay was unique but maybe writing about art was too offtopic for a chemistry research program

Got into WSSP 2017 at Texas Tech this year as a sophomore.

Basic Stats:

GPA: 3.97UW, 4.16/4.5 W

Class Rank: private school doesn’t rank but 1/85

SAT: 1570 (790M/780W)

Awards: AIME Qualifier (4x), 9 on AIME but no USAJMO qual though :(, top 25 at Mathcounts State, 2x mathcounts chapter individual and countdown champion, many other local and state level math awards

Other Details: 5 on AP Calc BC as a freshman, significantly harder courseload than anyone else in grade, not Asian (lol)

EC’s/Leadership: Math Club co-president, 3 sport varsity athlete as a freshman, Cycling Club founder, Student Council grade Rep, worked freshman, and a bunch of other clubs as member/VP’ing, Over 75 hours shadowing surgeons/chemists/anesthesiologists/etc

Community Service: Volunteer coordinator at large non-profit marathon, 80+ hrs volunteering at local hospital, tutoring high school age kids at local public school

9/10 and 10/10 respectively recommendations from Calc BC and AP Chem teachers

I thought my essay wasn’t amazing (but I always don’t like my essays), was about my mathcounts coach in middle school and his many life lessons. Probably didn’t hurt my application though.

I think my stats, courseload, and math proficiency were the main reasons I got in. Super excited and I’ve accepted my offer!

Feel free to ask any questions

@GeometryForLife

GPA: idk my school does it weird. Never dropped below 97 in all AP classes though

Rank: 2/600+

Transcript: High course rigor. I took a lot of science courses, and I took physics one year earlier than my peers, which probably reflects positively.

SAT: 1520 (760 both sections)

Awards:
2 President Volunteer Service Awards
8 AcDec medals
Orchestra All region and All area
Orchestra Solo and Ensemble highest class
FBLA Business Communications (national qualifier)
FBLA Business Calculations (state qualifier)
FBLA Organizational Leadership (state qualifier… nationals TBD)
UIL Spelling 2nd place district team (regional qualifier)
Texas Music Scholar Award
AP Scholar with Distinction (?)
Miscellaneous regional tennis medals
I don’t have a lot of science awards compared to other students since my school does not emphasize academics much. This was probably my weakest point.

ECs:
Intern for 2 summers at private insurance co.
Orchestra -Secretary/Historian

Future Business Leaders of America-Historian, Vice President

Key Club-Treasurer

Science NHS-Vice President

Spanish NHS/ Spanish Club-Vice President

A lot of local stuff I dont want to post bc confidentiality.
200+ hours

I’m really into community service because I love helping people, no matter how cliche that sounds.

Recs:
Extremely strong recs from Physics and Chemistry teachers. Both have had me for two years. Honestly, I cried at my chem teacher’s rec letter.

Essay:
About my passion for neuroscience and how I want to be a doctor. I believe this and the teacher recs are what got me in tbh. I rewrote my essay 4 times before being satisfied. I’d recommend getting others to read it.

Don’t be too discouraged that you didn’t get in this year. A lot of professors don’t like choosing younger students because they’re afraid that they’re not mature enough yet. If you can’t do research, see if there are any science-related community service opportunities if that is your true interest. I would work on the essay and developing strong relationships with your teachers. Also, do your application early. I left everything until the last minute, and it was extremely stressful. If you don’t get in next year, it’s not the end of the world. Have backup plans. Hope this helps and good luck next year!
