Welch Summer Scholar Program

Hi, what are the statistics about acceptance into the WSSP program? I’m currently a sophomore.

@rmal613, I’m a little late in responding to your question, but I believe the statistics for the acceptance into the WSSP program is not published and no one except the program coordinators would be able to answer your question accurately (you could try emailing them and see if they are willing to tell you). Also, the statistics vary each year since the number of applicants changes, although probably not too drastically (I would think that the number of applicants increases each year though). I participated in this program last summer, and the scholars and I discussed this topic. We estimated that there would be at least 500+ applicants and around 30 are accepted (there are about 6 scholars per campus and there are 5 campuses). A similar program to this one, the Clarks Summer Program, had more than 1700 applications this year, but this program accepts applications from all over the world (still, most of the participants and applicants are probably Texan because the program takes places at Texas Tech). I mention this one because I think this program is pretty comparable to Welch (in terms of stipend, length of program, learning and research experience), and you may want to apply to this program in the future (it is offered to high school juniors and seniors only), if you haven’t already considered doing so. This program seems just as wonderful as Welch, and I regret not knowing about and applying to it! I hope this helps and let me know if you have any more questions about Welch!

I was just accepted! I am going to attend, since I was rejected from every other summer program I applied to (lol). I am a junior from Austin, and I was placed at the UT Arlington site. Can any previous participants tell me a bit more about the program and their experiences?

A series of questions I have: Did you get to design your own research projects, or were you assigned to projects? Was the research in-depth, and did you achieve any meaningful results? How many hours did you spend in the lab each day? What activities did you do outside of the lab? Any other details you’d like to share would be great. Thanks so much!
