<p>I’m curious as well… we’re told that only 15 - 20 deferred students get in RD. What did you do to set yourself apart from the hundreds of others?</p>

<p>i’m a huge lover of running, and in my high school, you don’t need to try out in order to make it on the cross country or track team. however, i don’t know if it’s the same at williams. i’m very interested in joining the cross country team, but i’m not sure how it works! do runners on the team have to try out to make the team? i sure hope not :(</p>

<p>Thanks for the welcoming Aslanthelion! I have tons of questions, but the one that worries my grandma most is the weather. In Albania, if it reaches 32 we call it a day and burrow under blankets. What about rain and snow and stuff?</p>
<p>Haha EmpathSilvio that sounds exactly like South Carolina! We get an inch of snow and school is closed for two days, so I have no idea what clothes to buy (I don’t think I own a matching pair of gloves.)

<p>Charmeleon, I was recruited for track but my track host wasn’t recruited before getting accepted, if that helps. But I’m class of 2016, like you, so I’m not sure.</p>
<p>Aslanthelion, thanks for taking the time to answer questions! Could you describe the social life at Williams in terms of what kids do on the weekends?</p>
<p>@EmpathSilvio and @noisyimpatntspdr, I’m class of 2016 as well, but I know that during one of the first weeks at Williams there’s a trip to a local mall for all the kids who come from warmer places in order to buy appropriate apparel. Other than that, my only advice is to layer. Have a comfortable base layer (underwear, t-shirt, etc.), a warmth layer (some sort of fuzzy jacket/thermal), and an outside layer that protects from wind and water. Also make sure to have plenty of socks, a pair of gloves/mittens, and a warm hat.</p>

<p>Layers are good–I always find the frosh quad dorms and many of the academic buildings pretty warm when the heat is turned on, so its nice to have lighter sweatshirts/fleeces to wear inside in addition to a heavy winter jacket. Its important to have a variety of clothes in your wardrobe for first semester because it can reach up to 90 degrees in early September (though that’s rare) and perhaps down to 0 degrees a few nights before winter break. Quality snow boots are a must–the facilities crew does a great job clearing snow off the paths and streets, but if you need to get to class or to a dining hall during a snow storm, the paths may not be clear. It’s also important your boots have good traction because there are a few sidewalks with poor drainage and thus where ice will form.</p>
<p>First off, welcome to Williams (I am class of '15 and totally psyched for all of you). One of my friends (also '15) made a facebook group to connect with other students (future and current), which can be found at <a href=“https://www.facebook.com/groups/191977757563996/[/url]”>https://www.facebook.com/groups/191977757563996/</a>. Another site is usually made, but it’s full of people who put ads for stuff that people don’t really need. Last year, groups like this served as a pretty good resource for quick answers to questions, so feel free to join.
As for winter, I’m from SoCal, and I haven’t had a problem yet. Mind you it wasn’t really snowing when I came back, but I imagine layering and a solid coat would suffice. And snow boots are a fabulous idea as well.
