Not overwhelming at all. The men and women for others and cura personalis aspects are certainly mentioned a lot, but theres quite a number of atheists and non Christians here (I’m in this group). I’ve never felt any pressure at all to even have a basic knowledge of christianity, and are really only mentioned in clubs under campus ministry and theology classes (which don’t even have to be about Christianity)
Hi! I’m very excited I was admitted to BC! I’m a gay student and I was wondering what the LGBT+ environment is like. Are people generally accepting and supportive?
@NervousMAmom my daughter is a freshman on newton. Just got into Vandy for soph year and is thrilled. How soon did your daughter need to find housing for jr year? Someone said it happens in like oct if they want a good close place! After a year of newton my daughter wants as close as possible!
Hello all, I’ve been admitted from CA to BC, but I have never actually visited before. All I’ve heard about student life and culture has been from these forums and word of mouth experience. I was hoping that someone would be able to inform me on how student life is on campus, such as: is it a liberal or conservative student body? Is it easy to make friends or are people cliquey and closed off? Are classes/social activities manageable and professors helpful? No doubt I have heard the old stereotype of “rich, white preppy kids”, but I like to keep an open mind before I take a visit for myself, I am neither rich (far from it) nor white, so I was wondering how minority students feel about BC.
I am from one of the most liberal parts of CA and I know Boston itself is also very liberal, but is BC a big culture change at all? Or is it mostly the same as the rest of Boston?
(Sorry if I asked a lot, I’ve never been to the east coast )
@hemingways wondering the same things!! from CA and admitted for nursing how about you?
@immomtoone It varies, really. The house rentals are usually lined up in the fall of sophomore year, but, there are a lot of apartments in the area too. The one snag is that classes started the last week of August and many area rentals start September 1st. We were lucky and found one with an August 1 availability. We didn’t sign our least until April of soph year, and got a great place very convenient to campus and (without divulging where she lives, lol) as close as you can get to the 2000 Comm Ave residence hall, where a lot of her jr 4-yr housing friends live, without actually living there. In other words, if they don’t have something lined up before semester break, they need not panic. BC also offers off-campus housing events twice per year. Once in the fall and again after semester break. https://offcampushousing.bc.edu/
@2022vibes no way! I am also a nursing major! So excited to see another one of haha
@hemingways omg yay!!! congrats!
I would recommend getting a real estate agent at the beginning of her sophomore year and start the process of looking and putting down a deposit. Homes go fast and by the time October rolls around, the homes for rent are taken. I learned the hard way and secured a home for my daughter the fall of her FRESHMAN year. Good luck!!
@katey27 I personally do not find the Jesuit aspect overwhelming. There is obviously a lot of resources on campus if you are actively religion, including an off campus transportation that will bring you to the religious place of practice of choice. I am not religious at all and have never felt pressured to attend mass or left out because I do not go. I have a lot of friends that go to mass every week and a lot of friends that have never been. You do have to take a year of theology but like someone else said that does not need to be about Christianity. I took a class on personal responsibility. Hope this helps!
@jasejacc If you received 3 years of housing, you an appeal for the fourth year your junior year and depending on the number of students going abroad and living on campus that year you can sometimes get all four years. Majority of students at BC live on campus all 4 years unless they only have 3 years of housing, which they will then move off campus their third year and return on campus for senior year.
@2022vibes I cannot speak from personal experience but the friends that I have that are gay have never felt judged or outcasted. I know it can be daunting as BC is a jesuit university, but there a number of students that are not Catholic that are super supportive and even those that are Catholic are typically supportive of well. There are groups on campus that advocate for equality and campus support, however, I am not sure if they are recognized by the university. Even though I can’t relate personally, I would never want to attend a school that has students that are unsupportive or unaccepting of anybody and I think BC has a very understanding community. I hope this helps and good luck with the decision process!
@aveagle04 thank you so much! that answer definitely put me more at ease
@NervousMAmom thanks….the junior housing thing is already a stress for me! and I note you live in MA (well I assume based on your name!) I live here, too, so feel that at least I know the area!!
@dreambig101 you got junior housing the fall of FRESHMAN year?! Oh my!
Yes, it was actually November of my daughter’s freshman year. My son had already dealt with the headache of finding a house in October of his Sophmore year so I decided to be proactive. We found a great house on the closest street to BC and secured it with a deposit. It made life so much easier!!!
I would say the overall environment at BC is pretty supportive of the LGBT+ population. A large portion of UGBC, which is the student government here, is focused on GLBTQ issues (GLC), and they host formals, discussions, and events, if you’re interested in that.
In terms of people, i think most students are very welcoming and dont judge people based on sexuallity. The administration could be more supportive but I feel like that’s the case at most schools.
BC, like all colleges, is pretty liberal. The loudest polotical voices on campus are definitely liberal, and the student government is also definitely more liberal than conservative. While BC is definitely more white and more well off than most schools, a lot of programs exist on campus to further the voices of minorities like FACES, the bowman ahana intercultural center, and others.
@dreambig101 Were you able to actually sign a lease that far in advance? While a lot of rentals in the area around campus DO turnover every 12 months, most leases still have a renewal clause in them for the current tenant to renew their lease for another year.
@IceIceCornell thank you!!! that makes me feel more comfortable!
