Welcome Class of 2022! :) Ask questions about BC here!

Right

@magicsecret Hi! You can be in any school to take PULSE, you do not need to be in MCAS.
Yes, it is workable to fulfill pre-med requirements while doing the Applied Psych major in Lynch because that major doesn’t have too many classes. I think doing the pre-med requirements, Applied Psych, and Psych in MCAS would be too much and you would have to overload, but if that is something you are interested in, your advisor will help you plan out your schedule.

Honestly, I don’t think I would recommend studying the two psychs because a lot of my classes are repetitive and I often wish that I chose something completely different. However, each psych program does offer different classes. For example, mcas is more science oriented and offers classes in neuroscience and focuses on the neurology of psychiatric disorders and mental illnesses. Lynch psych is more applicable based and offers classes that focus on the different methods of treatment, stigma of mental illness, and the specific diagnoses of varying mental illnesses.

I am not in the teacher certification program so I cannot offer any information!
MCAS: Social Psych (Prof. Heberlein), Behavioral Neuroscience (Prof. Mcdannald)
Lynch: Mental Illness, Interpersonal Relations, Personality Theories

@magicsecret I don’t think you need to do anything to prepare for the Applied Psych major. The professors are very personable and welcoming and will help you understand anything from class and are also invested in getting to know about your personal life.

If you want to apply for a research position at BC, it would look good to have some type of research experience before applying. I didn’t and still got a position but I think it is easier if you have past experience. Also, if you are thinking about PULSE and want to work with children, make sure you have previous experiences of working with children as it can be competitive to get the PULSE placement of your choice.

@aveagle04 Do you have Laptop recommendations for incoming freshman? They can email the school too but they want students to bring them to orientation (July 8th). With their HS graduation more than two weeks, trying to manage time. We should shop soon.

^^no rush.

If you purchase a new laptop in August, you’ll just have to download a few apps again, all of which are online. Don’t sweat it.

re: mac or pc, your preference. If Mac, suggest a powerbook over Air. Get extra memory, and it’ll last four years.

@aveagle04

Thank you for giving such helpful info!

Can you give any info regarding the Freshmen English Placement Test? How’s the test like? Anything we can do to prepare? And how does it affect our core English course choice?

As for the Laptop, my BC rising senior in CSOM said she doesn’t know anyone that doesn’t have a Mac as their laptop.

I don’t remember my daughter having to take an English placement test. Is that new? She just took a writing and a literature classes. Despite not being a love of English from an academic standpoint, she actually enjoyed both classes and her professors, and did well in both.

Correct me if I am wrong, I think the English Placement Test is for those who speak other languages at home and use other languages as first language ( despite their SAT, TOFEL, AP or any exams score and the years they lived in the States).

But thx for sharing, English course doesn’t sound too troubling. :stuck_out_tongue:

@magicsecret no the English classes were not troubling at all. She really enjoyed them. And you must be right, they must give placement tests to the students that speak a different language at home.

John Anderson was her lit professor (she took this one first semester) and she loved him! I was worried, but she really loved it and did great.

Also, the writing class is fun (second semester). I think each class is assigned a theme and they write essays within that theme. Her topic was food, so she was very happy!

Good luck to to your BC Eagle!!

Per BC IT, the mac/pc divide is about 50:50. (And they should know.)

btw: I’m surprised that there are that many Macs in CSOM. Excel is easier to use in Windows, says this Finance Guy, Mac fan but runs Parallels inside an iMac shell just so I can run Windows-Excel.)

I agree it sounds strange but she’s sitting next to me and I literally just asked her. I have heard the same thing about excel, but they all seem to still get Macs. I also think we heard before she started there that it was 50/50. Maybe the younger kids are actually using non-Macs now?

We just bought her a new laptop and she got another Mac, for what it’s worth.

I too am surprised to read the comment on the high use of Macs in CSOM. Our son is a recent CSOM graduate who used a Windows laptop during his time there. I recall him once saying his classmates had a mix of both Macs and Windows laptops.

Based on reply #126 above, it looks like things have changed.

For what its worth, my CSOM rising sophomore uses a Dell laptop.

I’m sure the BC tech people would be willing to talk to anyone who had questions about the laptop situation. I’m sure they can make them all work and compatible with everything they need.

A little confused about housing…hope someone can help, thx!

First, the Res Life FAQ says limited “single” are reserved for medical placement. Does that mean incoming freshmen
“should not” select the “traditional-single room” as their housing preference on the app unless they have medical needs?

Second, the Living&Learning Community doesn’t specify where each exact community locates or what type of the room/housing style it’s like, can anyone share some experience?
Are they located far away or closer to campus? Do student live in single, double, triple, or what type of room? Is the price higher for LLC? Is it recommended?

I think that means you should NOT select traditional single room unless you have medical needs.

As for living and learning…I’m not exactly sure. I would call res life on Monday and ask. And verify your first question too.

On the student welcoming book, it says the grant will be distributed to our account once our financial aid application status is verified. However, I’ve not seen any movement or change over the past month. Does anyone know around when will the grant be distributed? Thanks!

I would call the financial aid office to check on the verification and then check with the bursar to whoever issues the bills.

Yes, will definitely do that next week!
Just wondering if other incoming freshmen have already received the grants in their billing account, or is this suppose to happen later in July?
