^is the senior “son” ;)

I’d just like to ask whether I could take the TOEFL on the 15th of January and send them directly to CM or not?
Because there are no available spots for December in my country. :/

When you apply ED II, is your essay written only about your top choice school? Can you apply to other schools that you can be considered for during RD? If you’re rejected from your top choice are you considered for any other schools in the RD period? Thanks and please respond!

hi, on the CMU supplement, it asks if I was interviewed by an alumni representative. I WANT to be interviewed, but I probably will not be able to get one before January 1st, the deadline for the supplement. So, what do I put down in the supplement’s question?

^^ very good question. can anyone help!?

the website states that you should have your interview by Feb 1:

Alumni interviews will be available for prospective students applying for Fall 2011 from October 1, 2010 until February 1, 2011.

View the Alumni Interviewers Directory.

The Adcom on the FB CMU Admissions page told someone who asked a similar question to phone them and they would connect you to an active interviewer.

But again-- having or not having an interview is less than a half a percent in the decision making process here-- it’s a way to show demonstrated interest-- but on balance, it will really not swing your application either way.
Don’t fret if it doesn’t happen.

Hi,
On the CMU website, it says that juniors in high school are allowed to apply but it also says that there is a requirement of 4 years of english and history classes. Is this requirement waived for applying juniors? Also, if I don’t get in my junior year and reapply my senior year, will having applied once before affect my chances of getting in senior year? Thanks!

BEWARE, BEWARE!! CMU advertises that they will match competitive scholarships from other schools - the do NOT. My S was accepted and relied upon a scholarship offered from two competitive schools in the hopes that we could afford to send him to CMU. We sent a request for reconsideration of his financial aid award including proof of the scholarship from other schools and after torturing us for two weeks waiting for a decision, CMU said NO! We were devastated! Whatever number your CSS says, that is the number they stick with no matter what! Poor S! He is now planning to attend CWRU - a university that honors it’s promise to match competitive scholarships. It’s a shame really - CMU is missing out on a great student and a great kid! Shame on them!

Don’t they advertise they may match competitive scholarships?

I’m sorry your son’s offers weren’t matched, but I know myself as well as a number of other people on this forum have had their aid increased significantly after a review of peer schools’ offers.

I’m sorry this didn’t turn out favorable, but no where on their web site does it say they will match.

They are in fact very transparent about their approach to financial aid (see my earlier posts) and don’t pretend to meet unmet need the first or any continuing year. They state they will consider competing offers. They are transparent in that they state very clearly their approach to financial aid is to build a balanced and diverse class of future leaders. While I’m sure your son was wonderful (and if he wasn’t he wouldn’t be admitted) the harsh reality - there were probably many similar wonderful people. They place the money in strategic ways-- but they are upfront about it-- women in CIT and SCS are going to get more money, internationals no money, winners of major scientific prizes, nationally ranked athletes, future leaders – they get money.

For what it’s worth- by D has a great package- but not my S-- it is what it is. We just thank the lucky stars every day she’s got only one more year and that her CMU diploma will land her a lucrative job and she can put some cash on the table so her bro can make it through.

Case is a great school - he’ll meet many students who turned down CMU.

I decided to take a gap year to work and study before I go to college. I did not apply to CMU during the normal application period and would like to now. Should I write about/explain my decision (for a gap)? and how?

Also, I did not take the subject tests, the colleges I had applied to didn’t require them, is it acceptable to do that now? (technically four months after graduation)?

Dear CMU representative,
What are the CORE requirements for a transfer applicant to the College of Fine Arts?
I currently go to Berkeley City College and also want to know what courses I will need to take in order transfer over to become a design major in addition to any general education/core classes required.
I am finalizing my schedule for the fall semester
I hope to hear from you soon!

the CMU rep hasn’t posted here in literally years You’d be better off emailing the design department directly! info@design.cmu.edu
