Welcome Day Questions

My son was admitted EA into the College of Engineering and we're signed up to attend the College of Engineering Welcome Day. They just had him customize his schedule, and I noticed that there's no option to do a basic campus tour or tour the International Village (he's been admitted to the honors program).

He hasn't visited before, so hasn't done those basic tours. Are they assuming that we'd have seen them prior to applying, or are those things included in other sessions? It's a Sunday, so there won't be any "regular" admissions tours going on. We can stay until Monday and do a regular tour if that makes sense. If we stay, is there a way to arrange to sit in on a class as well on the Monday? I can't find anything on their website (except pertaining to the law school). Yes, we can call or email admissions, but I'm sure they have their hands full, so if it's something we can set up through another channel, they'd probably love it if we didn't contact them ;-)

I can’t go on Welcome Day. But I am going on a regular weekday and signed up for a Inside Northeastern - Admitted students only program. I was told that it will be a campus tour and a session explaining more about the school and co-op for admitted students. I also later that day have a tour specifically of International Village and my parents are trying to arrange for me to meet with someone from the honor’s program after that. You can probably email admissions and see about a regular tour on Welcome Day or go online and sign up to do the stuff I am doing if you stay over until Monday. We signed up for the International Village Tour and Admitted students only program online.

The basic campus tour will be running throughout the Welcome Day so you can hop into one at the Visitors Center whenever you have time on the day of. There will probably be an International Village tour running on Monday if you decide to stay.
If you want to sit in on a class, your best bet is to contact an academic advisor at the College of Engineering and they can work something out for you more likely than not.

I was wondering if they’d be running tours throughout the day that just weren’t on the schedule. We have a “full” schedule but I’m sure we can find a chance to do that. I’d be surprised if they’re not doing IV tours on the Welcome Day as well since the IV is a draw for honors students. I was wondering if the honors college presentation included an IV tour (they could do the talking part while walking over and in the classrooms in IV or something).

The honors presentation is usually given by an honors advisor and they talk about the program and the things students can take advantage of. There isn’t an actual tour component integrated into the presentation.

When my family attended the welcome day for ea students 2 years ago the honors session did have a tour of IV with an honors student. There were only a few of us on the tour so we got a lot of individual attention from the student and was able to ask her a lot of questions. The Honors presentation was very good - it was run by the head of the program and a panel of honors students.

I sat in on a class when I visited. I first called admissions and ended up being directed to the head of the BNS program. An advisor would also be potentially a good person to contact. I also got a chance to talk with the head of the program one on one, and it was a really good experience. It definitely influenced my decision to go to Northeastern.

My daughter and I will be attending the CCIS admitted student event.
We’ll try to go on a tour during the day.
We’ll also attend the WPI admitted student event the following week.

They are very different schools, so she should have a good idea which one she prefers after visiting both for a second time.

For anyone else who is wondering (assuming it will be similar in April), we went to the first Honors College presentation (there were 2 slots where you could choose it) and after it, there was a tour of the honors housing (both freshman in IV and upper-year in West). We had to miss our next session to do that, but we had already decided to skip that anyhow. If you definitely want to do two of the afternoon sessions and get the dorm tours, it might work better to do the honors college in the second slot, assuming they ran tours after the second instance also. We also only spent about 10 minutes in the Engineering “fair” and then went on a regular campus tour. They had regular campus tours and non-honors dorm tours running starting at 11:30 (every 10 minutes or so another tour went out). Be prepared for a lot of walking outdoors even if you don’t want to do a campus tour – they locations for the events throughout the day were very spread out.

Thank you all for your visit reports. My daughter just got her acceptance email today and we have not visited yet. Your input will help to decide whether to do the Welcome Day in April versus an earlier customized visit.

My D got into College of Engineering with Connections Scholarship. Thank you mathmom for the report.

We did the Welcome Day based on a recommendation here, but it was long and (to be honest) mostly boring. If I had it to do again, I’d probably do a customized visit. The main good thing about Welcome Day was that the honors college presentation was quite compelling, and that’s not normally an option on a regular visit day.

We are planning on visiting during springbreak and fortunately it is not springbreak time for Northeastern. We will request customized visit. Thanks for the comments.

We may yet go back during our spring break, if he is still undecided, though I asked him to make enough notes from this visit that it won’t be necessary!
